Sewing. Went into Central London, bought Christmas presents for TWO people and am now staring at my bank account with a horrified feeling. I do however have some banging fucking bloomers in which I look rad as shit. One of the characters for the next project - Aaron Kirke - has developed the most beautifully clear character voice, down to accent ( Read more... )

“died at [name of hospital]. committed during her menopause. full frontal lobotomy. no grave”

Well, that's the most depressing thing I've heard recently.

Reminds me of my aunt Nuala who got depressed after she and her fiancé broke up, got committed to a mental asylum because she was 'having a breakdown', got ECT and when her fiancé tried to get her back by writing to her and sending her a ring, he own mother hid this from her and threw the ring in the river... and then lots of other shitty things happened to Nuala. She married a jackass who didn't give a shit about her, got crippling arthritis everywhere so she could barely move and had to use a wheelchair and died far too young when I was a child. Wasn't fair, she was really beautiful and a nurse but they didn't like women getting upset about things back in those days so you were labelled a mentaller and a hysteric and locked up.

I honestly think that's what happened with L (she finally has a name, too, but I am not keen on using it for some reason? A really pretty name): she had the temerity to finally lose her temper a bit after a lifetime of being married to a furious frustrated alcoholic and had part of her brain hacked out basically as punishment for it. :(

This is why I'm not sure genealogy is a great use of anyone's time, you just see the ugly bones of the world as they're connected to you, and there's enough sadness as it is.

I like knowing what all the people who eventually led to me got up to... There's some interesting stories there, but there are a lot of women being really accomplished but then getting married, having to quit their jobs/careers, getting trampled on by life, and then, like most good Irish Catholics in days of yore, having eleventy babies and then being unable to hack it. Meanwhile, the blokes travelled all over the world and did mad things like design and build bridges in Venezuela, or work for the UN and set up telegram and postal systems in Vietnam... during the War. Aaaaand, I do nothing but use my degree to fart around on the internet and pretend to be an actor!

Mine just seems to be unrelenting sadness: wanted to be an artist but died a farm labourer. Wanted this: had a billionty kids and was driven insane. Wanted her kids to be artists: both of them were but neither were a big enough success for her. Died angry and cancerous. Worked all his life on a farm: died sad and cancerous. Never got a chance to be her own person and had what I can only describe as a "Harry Potter childhood", bounced from one set of horrible people to another, died far too early. Over and over. It's like wow, I thought my mother's family were depressing but they're just happy-clappy religious loons descended from FRIGHTENINGLY SEVERE religious loons. The other side are all booze and suicide. :(

Wow, those two photos both made me go DEL. His smile in the bottom one and her profile and smile.

Bottom: The caption on this photo includes “died at [name of hospital]. committed during her menopause. full frontal lobotomy. no grave”.

Pretty sure you've told me this before but ):.

Yeah i am pretty much an exact mix of my parents. It would be funny if they weren't both shit.

I've told a lot of people a lot, variations on that depending on which I'd been told most recently/remembered. I've just never seen her face before. You kind of forget that she was a normal woman who played with dogs before that happened to her. And I didn't know she hadn't even been given a grave.
