I rewatched the original Karate Kid yesterday. I think I hadn't seen it since it was originally in theaters. I found that indeed, it was a decent movie, improbable but well-constructed and fun. And of course it does the mentor/student thing to the extreme, which hits me hard. Not talking anything shippy here, just the core relationship

My problem with that otherwise lovely bit of fencing-taking-a-left-at-Albuquerque is the bit of dialog in the middle where Giles says he considers Xander a friend etc etc. It reads all wrong to me. Giles would *never admit such a thing* unless in extreme circumstances. He would glower, grump, say something biting and completely self-disguising, and then proceed as the fic describes. WHERE'S THE SNARK?

Yeah. That's the exact spot I have a problem with, too. Doesn't fit.
