I have seen it once before, though the Other One has not, but it was a long time ago and my recollections are hazy. And I didn't know the original series at that point.

Having finished it... the second half was less bad than the first half, if only because things were actually happening and they discarded the "literally everyone is super depressed" plotline. Once we got past all the 20 minute long establishing shots and things.
