My Thoughts on The Cursed Child---Let Me Show You Them

Feb 11, 2016 23:58

I remember back when I first heard about the "Cursed Child" play, I was hardly excited at all. I saw it as kind of a local thing for people who live in London or are visiting there, kind of like the Harry Potter musical (there was something like that, wasn't there?). One of the reasons I wasn't too interested was because it was supposed to be about ( Read more... )

I'm wondering if it might deal with Harry's past through his being AS's father, which is a very play kind of thing to do.

Yes, one thing they could do which would be "theatrical" is have the same actor play both Harry and his father James, or Harry and his son Albus. Harry looking so much like James and Al looking so much like Harry makes that even more possible.

, kind of like the Harry Potter musical (there was something like that, wasn't there?).

Yeah, but I honestly never saw the appeal. It wasn't so much a musical in the traditional sense as it was a bunch of songs and acts all centered around the HP verse. I preferred the one a friend wrote, although it was incomplete and only one song was ever put to music. (You may remember, it was pretty popular on Sugar Quill. Barbara the Wallpaper wrote it.)

However, A Very Potter Musical or whatever it is had a huge fanbase, and the guy who played Harry even ended up getting a role on Glee, so obviously I was in the minority.

Ah, the "musical" I was thinking of was just misconceived reporting of this play:

My daughter loves the Very Potter Musical. I've never managed to watch it all the way through, but I get bored watching videos on my computer. Probably would enjoy it in person.

I'm getting tapped by my university to speak a bit about this. I teach a history of the occult course and so I'm interested in what they do with the curse. Looking back at the origins of the plot and thinking about how JKR likes to invoke parents and family legacies, I am figuring that the curse will be something of a Potter family problem. I see some other fans discussing the Hallows as a possible trigger. It will be interesting to see what eventually emerges.

Interesting! Yes, the Hallows don't seem like a very good fit for the original vision for pre-Hogwarts Harry, though of course they could have come in when Jack Thorne wanted to "bring the darkness back."

I have only skim-read the Pottermore material on the Potter family history. Must go back and read again!

Did you ever read and/or see The Cursed Child? I've been so curious to know what you think...

Hi angua,
It has been almost a year since you last posted on your livejournal now. As someone who enjoyed your thoughts on a wide range of HP subjects, I am wondering do you have any plans to post your thoughts on the Cursed Child play? Thanks!

Hi angua,
It was a pleasant surprise to see your reply here after nearly a whole year of absence. As you probably gathered, I have been rather busy in real life as well and haven't been checking livejournal for a very long time. I was in fact reading another article but I saw this but I will definitely try to comment on the reivew when I got the chance.
