Radio Shack ist kaput?!

Catching up on my reading here, I see that Sears bought K-Mart or something. I am reminded of something I keep forgetting to post: No More Radio-Shack1. Which is both good and bad. Bad, because I miss that "we" had a place to walk in and buy diodes and solder. Good, because that place hasn't actually existed for well over a decade, which this ( Read more... )

Our Radio Shacks are still called Radio Shack and still sell very limitted quantities of diodes and solder in a corner of the store.

Mostly they employ clueless idiots who agressively sell, mostly by lying about features, overpriced shitty consumer electronics to clueless old people who think that Radio Shack is a reasonable place to buy a new stereo system or DVD player.

Apparently, Radio Shack Canada has been bought out by Circuit City. Radio Shack in the States is just fine.

In fact (confused yet? Just wait...) Radio Shack US is about to start opening stores in Canada to compete with the former Radio Shack Candada stores that are now The Source By Circuit City stores...

Actually, if you go to their Web site, you will note that it is only in Canada. Apparently, Circuit City bought out the Canadian branch in April. I might mention as well that Radio Shack's US site makes no mention at all of this. Typical, eh?

K-Mart bought Sears. :)And they are spinning the Land's End brand back off again (which had been bought by Sears a few years ago).

Man, you're doubly useful today. I forgot that about Lands' [sic] End, if I ever knew it. Those are some friendly and helpful customer service folk, there. Or were.

The continued existence of Radio Shack amazes me. They push cell phones a lot, but the stores are so teeny and crowded that I can't imagine it's a good place to buy anything. I picked up things like voltage adapters there, or TV signal converters, but overall I wouldn't buy things there.

On the other hand, they tend to be tiny stores in enclosed malls, as opposed to big-box stores in strip malls (the new American menace.) So there's that.
