betwixt damnation and impassioned clay

Today I saw the Donmar King Lear with Derek Jacobi, via the magic of NT Live, and -- well. HOLY SHIT just about describes it, or at least I still haven't quite formulated all the right words; while the production is not completely and beyond question without flaws, Jacobi's Lear is just as magnificent as everyone says it is. If you have the chance ( Read more... )

I watched the end of Slings and Arrows today, and even just watching the bits of Lear that the show includes has me all weepy. I've only seen the play performed live once, and that was kind of a travesty, and even then the end tore me up.

I actually saw William Hutt's last (I think) production of King Lear at Stratford, back in high school -- except I didn't get to see him, because his understudy did the student matinees. I've always been disappointed, retrospectively, about that -- but even the understudy (who normally played Kent) was superb.

BUT. DEREK JACOBI. *flail*

Netflix has McKellan for the RSC, which I bet is not a travesty, and Orson Welles(!) in a cut version.

Oh, I've seen the McKellan, and I own the Olivier. I've just only seen it live once. :)

I wish NT Live were broadcasting anywhere where I live. (There are no venues in any of the states next to Mississippi, let alone in Mississippi itself.) Alas.

It's on here in Perth this afternoon - I would go but I've got the rellies coming for a (late) birthday afternoon tea. Fingers crossed there will be a DVD.

Well, I've seen Derek Jacobi live more than I've seen my great niece (God Only Knows, The Tempest, Don John and Hollow Crown), so it wasn't too hard a decision. 8-)

Lucky, lucky you. I probably will never see him live. Sigh.
