Dec 26, 2009 16:30

This is likely only the first round; more will follow, now that the server is behaving itself more consistently and I can peruse the archive. Also, Yuletide Madness still hasn't opened, so there's that, too.

12 recs in the following fandoms: Slings & Arrows; Shakespeare, Henry IV (3 fics); Arthurian Legend; Child Ballads; Anastasia Krupnik; The Mikado; Shakespeare, Henry VI; Historical RPF - 15th century; Bisclavret; Cambridge Latin Course )

yuletide 2009, fic recs: historical, fic recs: shakespeare, fic recs: misc, fic recs: slings & arrows, fic recs

Re: Betsy Bell. I remember that ballad! It appears in The Autobiography of Henry VIII where it goes "Bessy kept the garden gate while Mary kept the pantry/Bessy always had to wait while Mary lived in plenty." Only there it's supposed to represent Elizabeth I and Bloody Mary. I didn't know there was ballad!fic for Yuletide! (Though isn't it technically original?)

There sure is ballad!fic, and it is great! The one this fic refers to (and the version I learned) is less topical but with more plague:

Betsy Bell and Mary Gray,
They were bonny lasses,
They biggit a bower o'er yon burnside,
And they theeked it o'er wi' rashes.

They theeked it a' o'er wi' rashes green
They theeked it o'er wi' heather,
But the plague came from the borough-toun
And slew them baith togither.

Here, have Steeleye Span's version. It's great.

Oh, that CLC fic is hysterical. And there's a second one for the fandom, in Madness.
