I sometimes wonder just what is the animating passion that causes people to do this sort of thing. Are they really in love with Shakespeare and just trying to access the text in a novel way, or is it more that "Shakespeare" is a word that sells tickets and allows them to go do the performance art piece they wanted to to, as long as they're willing to glance over their shoulders at the text once every few minutes.
Heiner Mueller's _Hamletmaschine_, for instance, as incomprehensibly wacked out as it gets, is in the former category. So you can never be too sure.

I used to be conservative about Shakespeare, too. I'm not anymore.
