What do "fly-over" states know about the life in the coast cities?

wow, so much bitterness about us poor fly-overs.

let's not use the term, if it causes major butthurt.

after all, flyover states have their own metropolises, in which life is not too different from what you are describing - expensive real estate, crazy rush hours' traffic, lack of social support, etc, etc.

life in, say, Atlanta, Georgia, another huge university metropolis with an international air hub - is not too different from your life in Boston, though of course the prices are not as insane.

so let's dump "fly-over" and use "boondocks", boonies, Middletown USA or any other term that describes not only flyover territory but a non-urban, rural or small urban enclave in either blue or red states.

the factors that define life in those places, the majority of america still, are:

1. there are no jobs. once manufacturing nearly died out, it is typical for a hick town to have ONE major employer, at most two - air base, college, hospital, gun factory, lightbulb facility, volkswagen plant.

2. population thus is in decline

And there is yet another layer, farm lands, when the closest town is 20-40 minutes drive, partially on a dirt road. And I still hardly understand anything at all about their lifestyle, despite hearing a lot about it from co-workers who grew up there.

No, actually, I don't feel any bitterness at all. I do feel that all these statements about "you don't know how they/we live" are empty and meaningless. Maybe I don't, but maybe I do. And in any case, the "don't know how we live" explains nothing about politics and voting, beyond "we vote with anger

Мне не кажется, что перечисление хороших или плохих факторов поможет что-то понять. "Понять" - это почувствовать, почувствовать - это получить собственный опыт.

В UK есть ощутимое разделение между Лондоном и не-Лондоном, югом и севером, западом и востоком, Англией и Уэльсом и Шотландией. И как и у вас, голосуют за разных, жалуются на разное.

Но на мой взгляд, это труднопримиримые противоречия. Вот оно вот так и все что можно сделать, это "сгладить углы" конфликта, создать общий знаменатель, при котором все будут умеренно недовольны.

Я живу в маленькой стране и то у нас есть противопоставление столица-глубинка, города-сельская местность, восток-запад, север-юг. И это несмотря на очень ровный уровень жизни, уровень образование, совершенную беслпатность школ и их независимость от родетельского достатка или образования и т.д. Просто людям надо искать своих и чужих и придумывать им отличительные особенности.

В Далласе классно. Никаких пробок. Офисы компаний - с иглочки и произведения дизайнерского искусства. В ресторанах вкусно (в отличие от МА) и порции огромные. Летом только жара страшная. И вообще скучно.

Everything that you wrote about schools is specific to your particular town, but not to mine, for example. Schools are financed locally in the U.S. We have crossing guards, school buses, our student to teacher ratio is kept at about 22 students/teacher, school buildings are constantly being renovated - everyone knows about our high school, we just had one of our elementary schools renovated, and others are in the pipeline. The other stuff is also applicable to other states, like low salaries and no social support.

I'm glad you're so entertained, but you were referring to MA towns, and my town's experience is clearly different. Newton North got only about 50 mil from the state, and that was just a great timing on the part of our mayor to grab the money when it was available - they changed the process for this kind of grants afterwards. But the rest was paid through taxes and debt, which we will be paying for.
And now, looks like all the towns go through this agency for the babkis:

I don't see why a town would not apply for state funds to improve their public school buildings. If that's the case - your town needs new elected representatives.
