has anyone used online back up services?

Я бекапаю на драйвы, которые растаскиваю по разным местам (ну типа один на работе).

И это я делал примерно с 1980-го года, когда были не драйвы, а ленты, и мы с работы периодически уносили ленты домой, именно на случай что всё сгорит на хрен, а мы в белых фраках.

Я, вроде, не параноик, но не стал бы доверять важные вещи настолько посторонним людям.

тут интересно получается: с одной стороны если вещи важные, то важно to get it right, а это скорее у кого-то получится кто специально этим занимается, а не у меня дома. С другой стороны -- да, боязно.

Но вон люди сайтам вроде mint.com свои банковские счета и пароли доверяют, и вроде тоже это становится мейнстримом.

Microsoft SyncToy + an "echo" profile + 2 or 3 portable HD's (e.g. WD's passport) stashed in various locations (work / home / friends) + backup once in a while = done.

Re: portable HD's -- are there such things as completely ready to go network RAIDs that one purchases for oneself, with easy software/UI for daily backups? And if there are, hey, grandma was asking for ideas for a NY present for me... :)

in SyncToy you can setup different types of "sync". 1-way, 2-way (changes in either place is reflected in other). I prefer "echo" - changes on LEFT, appear on RIGHT. Anything delete/added on left is then done on right. This way you have no old files on the right, and no changes on the right affect the left. a true "backup". SyncToy is pretty good, can setup multiple profiles to sync and can be run in silent mode (read: windows scheduler). RSync for windows is a pain to setup, so that's the alternative

But what I want is a "box" -- so that all that it needs, comes with it, it can be set up over wifi and then syncs over wifi automatically daily, without giving me problems.

How much data do you have? Do you want to backup everything, including pictures and music, or just some data?

I've no idea about encryption (they say "it is encrypted" -- whatever it means), but Comcast gives up free 2GB and then charges some money for more.

yes, but why comcast vs. mozy or whatever other services there are out there? The prices seem comparable. Is Comcast linked to having their cable modem service? I wouldn't want to be locked into that.

2gb is probably not enough, because I also want to backup pictures and music (yes, yes, if I only dealt with pictures more regularly, I wouldn't have to worry about that), but 50gb will be more than enough.

Have you considered Dropbox and Apple's me service? Both are very reliable, although I'm not sure about encryption.

В смысле удобства DropBox, вроде как, впереди. А шифровал бы я сам GPG. Это не совсем просто (в смысле что два шага, а не один), но зато уверенности больше: GPG это настоящее шифрование в котором уверен, а DropBox действительно очень удобный.
Все это несколько умозрительно: это то, как я бы сделал, но на деле не пробовал.

this is what this question is about: dropbox or other services. They are reliable for now, but I'm not so sure about their staying power and their security.

Also, my computer is not a mac.
