Call at 9:30 this morning.

Me: Hello?
Victor Garcia (our manager): Hi, this is Victor.
Me: Oh, hi.
Victor: I think I might have talked to you about this before, about possibly renewing your lease with us. If I'm not mistaken, it was a no, yes?
Me: Actually, no, we haven't talked about it. We plan on renewing.
Victor: Oh! Great, awesome.

Uh, did you get a form letter about your lease before? Because talking over the phone != legally binding.

Uh... what legal things here have to be given to us in paper form? He told us how much more the rent was going to be. I didn't sign anything, so our lease certainly isn't renewed. There's nothing to fight here. I'm just upset that I now need to find a new place quickly before all the decent places are gone. I wish I had known a bit sooner, but that's my manager being daft, not a legal issue.

I'm not fighting with you. He's supposed to give you a form basically saying "These are the terms of the lease beginning August 2009 to July 2010. If you wish to renew your lease and agree to these terms, sign here. If you do not respond by such-and-such date, we will assume you are not renewing your lease and begin advertising your unit." They're not supposed to call over it, because you can always deny the conversation happened.

Also, I think that if he never sends one of those forms, you can claim you were never asked to renew/leave and the terms of your lease can't change for next year. Loopholes: they're fun!
