Comedy in a sea of busyness

Last night I went to see Frank Skinner at the NIA. It's been 10 years since I last saw him (and indeed since he last did stand-up) and whilst his material has changed his general gutter-dwelling mind hasn't. Top stuff. From paedophiles, through terrorism, to giving the orals to women, no stone was left unturned and just when you think he's reached ( Read more... )

His tickets here were pretty cheap. It was only 20 quid (plus whatever booking fees and transaction fees Ticketmaster managed to put on top) and we had great seats about 20 rows back. It was being filmed so it may make its way onto DVD at some point so you can always buy it :)

Not quite that bad but it was certainly a lot closer to 25 than a) it was to 20 and b) it should have been.

When you say boxing night - do you do boxing (I'm interested because I do as well) or are you talking about having the day after Christmas Day - early?

It's a boxing night organised by a local Round Table. They get a bunch of amateur boxers (aged 11-16 usually) who fight in short bouts. In and amongst there's food and raffles and auctions to raise money for charity. I went last year and it was pretty entertaining and I've been invited again so I'm going again :)

I've been 5 times so far. England U21s v Italy U21s, England v Brazil friendly, England v Germany friendly, Muse and England v Estonia Euro 2008 qualifier. I would have been two other times but two of the Euro qualifiers were whilst I was in Barbados in September so I missed them.

Yep. He doesn't usually do much topical stuff. There was more than usual this time. He also made an interesting point that if any disabled young woman walked into a pub and said 'I married this old scouser who used to get drunk and beat me up and attacked me with a broken glass' there would be no shortage of people straining at leash saying 'let's go now - we'll fucking have him' but when Heather Mills says it in the papers the attitude is 'fuck the golddigging bitch'. I'd never really thought of it that way before...

yeah it is observations like that made by comedians that are one of the ways to make people realise just how insidious the output of many of the common media sources is today.
