The copyright status of Happy Birthday seems to be mostly fraudulent. There's a lawsuit in progress ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Birthday_to_You#History_of_the_song

(I can't tell if the site you linked to is straight, or very dry satire...)

Yes. Wild Mountain Thyme, too, and a few others where outrageous copyright grabs were made and accepted at a time when copyright lasted for far less time and it was far harder to prove prior art.

Good reading in that lot. The GoT, food history and minimum wage articles all give new food for thought. Thanks.

Thanks!

I thought the GoT one was interesting, and worth sharing, because I've seen a massive weight of arguments on one side of things, and very little on the other that was at all structured. I do think there are good arguments on both sides - but I'd seen so much anti that I thought sharing this was worth it.

I have sympathy for both sides on the GoT argument - I do think that the decision has been made to show the horror of all the horribleness, which was there, and is often ignored, which is in many ways important. On the other hand it can be really awful to watch.

Actually I disliked the J/C scene worse - because it looked a lot like rape to the viewer, but in the books, and apparently in the minds of the people who make the show (including the actress) it wasn't. Which shows a worrying lack of understanding about "what this will look like" from the people who make the show (directors make this sort of choice? I don't understand TV) whereas this latest was clearly intended as rape.

Just to confirm - because I saw the headline and thought "didn't we learn that last year"! - the Telegraph article on saturated fat and heart disease dates from March 2014.

This does not invalidate its findings! ;)

You're right - I'm _rubbish_ at noticing old articles too!

The impact of the minimum wage stuff will be fascinating to watch as will the reaction of other USian cities ( ... )

I was expecting Sansa to stab him in the eye or something, but she didn't. But I still was left with the impression that she is in control somehow, but playing a long game (very long, as there's still no eye-stabbing in episode 7). We saw her discuss the marriage with Littlefinger, and she seemed to be an active participant in planning that. While she maybe didn't know Ramsay was a sadistic shit, it's clear the Boltons are a bit dodgy just from their banner, so I figure she knows she's getting something that's not going to be pleasant. And like the article says, even knowing nothing about the Boltons, she knows how her society is set up and what's expected of her. So all that makes me think there is an endgame to come. I bloody hope so ( ... )
