Porn Battle Recs: Research is Hard Sometimes.

Feb 19, 2009 15:20

I liked a lot of the pornbattle stuff, I did. These are just things that stuck out to me, struck me as particularly hilarious or hot or as hitting a particular character nerve.  My preference is usually for plotty over plotless, for complicated characterization or a deep understanding of why people do what they do; I mean, yes, it has to be hot, ( Read more... )

Thanks so much for the rec! :-)

I understand completely about the Mulder or Scully with anybody else squick. I feel the same way about M/K. I think one of the reasons is that I've so completely personally identified as Krycek and identified my partner with Mulder that reading something like MSR is like reading about my own partner having sex with and loving someone else. So, no offense to the Mulder/Scully people, but it's just not gonna happen for me anymore. Can't read Mulder/Skinner, either, for the same reason. I have that he-belongs-to-Krycek, gonna-boil-a-bunny reaction. Okay, not THAT bad, but... ;-)

I hear you. I. HEAR. YOU. And I do something a little similar: http://amalnahurriyeh.livejournal.com/2542.html

I have this big meta post half-written on my relationship to canon (and since I write the canon pairing, I've got a different relationship to it than a slasher would), but I really try to interact as closely as possible with canon, especially with regards to relationships--which is why I only really buy M/S and M/K as pairings, because those are the only two that really make sense. (I mean, yes, there's Skinner's Undying Luv, but that's a different genre of thing.) So, that really limits my ability to see pairings as possible; there are interesting dynamics to explore in theory, but they just strike me as outside the range of the plausible. Anyway. Just ranting.

I'd love to see what you liked if you get around to it. Oh, and a general rec: I liked all of the stuff

With you, Shannon, Rhyme, and Frankie all writing, I was in M/K 7th heaven. :D

Last time I read all of the fics; this time I only read the Krycek ones, I admit, but oh boy were they good.

I don't think you missed too much that was really good. Do you watch BSG? icedteainthebag wrote a BSG/XF crossover that was really excellent, but only if you know the BSG canon in question; apart from that, you might like the memories_child piece MSR AU above. But, yeah, you got the good stuff.

I can't. I CAN'T READ THEM. Look, I really, really want to. But my brain just says NO and WRONG and WHY and things like that. Also, most people other than Our Heroes, naked? No, not so much. I realize I am kinda an idiot on this point.

I also can't read Mulder/other or Scully/other fics and enjoy them. I've tried, God knows I have, but my little heart, shipper that it is, can only imagine them together! If I'm reading a fic where they're paired with other people, I keep waiting for the shoe to drop so they can be together again XD It's sad, I know, but I'm glad I'm not alone in here.

This actually makes me feel better as a slasher participating in the battles. I always feel a bit like the shippers are going to think I'm a snob or "too good" to read their MSR fic, when it's simply that the M/K dynamic is just way too special and personal and important to me to be able to read anybody else. So thank you for sharing, yendrie! :-) I'd like to feel like a real part of the battle, doing good things with my shipper compadres, without actually reading the MSR. ;-)

That's exactly how I feel about the MSR. It's not that I don't appreciate other people's fics, because I do, but it's just a matter of taste, I guess. You sooo should feel a part of the battle, hun. Shippers, noromos, slashers.. they're all part of what makes this fandom so awesome :)
