I've just discovered that the wireless modem that my Internet provider installed in my apartment is broadcasting their public wireless network SSID and thus providing anyone with Internet access via the cable that is in my apartment. I wonder how legal that is. Will try to investigate

Last time I checked this was absolutely legal (both broadcasting and using free internet this way). In USA someone tried to prosecute neighbor in court but failed. Idea: similar to lamp. If you turn on the lamp on the side of the back yard that you own, can your neighbor sit on his side and use your lamp's light for reading? The answer is "yes" :)

Another idea that it's basically *your* responsibility to secure your network if you wish, not your provider responsibility. Provider, of course, should give you tools & access to let you do it yourself.

Hint: type ipconfig/all, get gateway IP, log in there, use default user/password, and configure your provider's router.

Sorry, I didn't describe the situation properly in the post. The router is locked by the provider (I can't access it's settings and according to the contract i'm prohibited to do that). It broadcasts two SSID's: one is my home network which is WPA protected. The other is provider's public unencrypted network SSID. People can connect to that network (using "my" router as access point) without a password, then purchase online time, and then access the Internet - all through "my" router.
This means the provider is performing commercial activity in my apartment without my explicit consent.

Go it. Yeah, that sux. What's even worse - it's possible he has your explicit consent (check your service agreement). But if he doesn't - looks like a good court case :)
