Getting a cameraaaaa!

My darling camera-loving LJ friends:

I am going to buy a camera with some money from my parents. I would like it to be a Canon.

The three I am considering are:

Canon powershot sd1400 IS

Canon power shot sx130

Powershot a3100 IS

I think I've already nixed the a3100 and am just debating between the huge sx130 and the tiny sd1400. Have any of you heard ( Read more... )

What are your intended uses?

The 1400 is pretty good for a pocket-able camera. Video capability is also pretty good for the size.

Have you considered the s90? It is similarly pocketable but has a higher-quality sensor. It's more expensive but with cameras you tend to get quite a bit more with the higher price points.

That's the thing! I can't decide if I want to ease of having a small camera to tote around, or the better macro abilities/slightly better pictures of the sx130. The s90 is very nice, but almost twice the prices I can find of the sx130 and sd1400, so it's out of my (and my parents') price range.

I just can't find anything that will tell me if the sx130's pictures are *significantly* better than the sd1400. I don't mind the big size because I'll mostly be using it for school and random shots of my own socks. But there's no point in getting a huge camera that's just as good as a smaller, easier to carry one.

Thanks so much for your input!

I suspect they're using the same sensor so image quality will depend more the lens glass. I'd lean toward the larger lens being of higher quality because of the way glass has to be manufactured for small cameras.

Really, though, the photographer is more important than either.

I'm going to see how many shots the sx130 can take on it's two AA's. I don't want to be changing batteries every other day. The sd1400 had a rechargeable lithium ion battery, which is so far making me lean toward that one.

Thanks again!

Ditto ABM as to what you want to use it for being important in making your decision. I have the Canon sd600 (several years old) and love its small purse/pocket size.

Extra battery = a must, and I got a larger memory card than the standard. I only ran out of memory when I took a lot of video in one day.

Thank you! I totally will get an extra battery! I don't think I'll be taking too many videos, but who knows what I'll have to record for school?
