Catch Me
Second Cut ~Friends~

Kame wanted to thank Akanishi for showing him the way to class but when he turned around, he saw the older had vanished.  Pity…

Was it something he said?  He thought he’d been polite enough in the asking.

In any event, the day continued along pretty well.  He managed to not be late for any of his other classes.  It did feel a bit strange, being back in the city after three years.  Nothing seemed like he remembered it.  Everything seemed… smaller somehow.  Or maybe closer would be a better description.  Within reach, because this time he was an adult, out of the house of his parents, and could do as he pleased.

Well, within limits.  He had to study, make good grades.  Graduate.  This was his chance to prove his strength.  He could show his teasing siblings that he could do more in life than play baseball.  Though…

Truthfully, he was floundering a bit.  Unsure.  But it was just his first day.  No point dwelling on things he couldn’t have anymore.  Sighing, he walked home to the dorm.

He never would have guessed at the wonderful surprise waiting there for him.  He barely closed the door behind him when he heard familiar voices.  Voices he hadn’t heard in three years.  Could it really be?

He all but burst into the dorm common room.  His roommate Akanishi was in there chatting animatedly with other student, presumably his friends.  He vaguely recognized two of them from his first class of the day, one was completely unknown to him… but the other two he knew quite well.  Waving wildly, he called out, “Yuu-chan!  Koki!”

Kame should have been prepared for what happened next since it had happened so often before but, in his defense, three years is a long time.  All he knew was that suddenly he had a very happy Tanaka Koki on his back and a half shocked, half amused Nakamaru Yuuichi staring at both of them.

“Kame?” came questioningly from Maru, while Koki triumphantly proclaimed, “Turtle Boyfriend, I can’t believe it’s you!”

The unexpected weight on his back caused Kame to fall to one knee, sending Koki tumbling to the ground.  “Not your boyfriend, Baldie!” he said through gritted teeth as pain shot outward from his knee.  Maru looked concerned.  Kame figured it was because he was surprised to see Kame buckle under the weight.  Not like he had wanted to, though.  But he managed to force a smile while he waited for the pain to subside.

It was only then that the three of them noticed the others staring.

“You guys know each other?” one of them asked.

Koki wrapped his arm around Kame’s, pulling him towards the group.  “Let’s see.  This one here, that’s Yamashita Tomoshisa.  Well, I mean, we all call him Yamapi, though.  That’s Ueda Tatsuya there.  Kind of weird-“

“Hey!” snapped Ueda.

“-But we like him anyway.  Let’s see… that’s Taguchi Junnosuke.  Don’t mind him, he’s total KY.  Hmm… typical, he’s not even listening anyway.  Well, we call him Junno most of the time.  This one is Bakanishi…”

This time the protest was from Akanishi.  “Don’t call me that!” he whined.

“Well, you are.”

“Am not.”

“Are too.”

“Am not.”  And Akanishi stuck his tongue out at Koki.

Maru stepped between them, saying, “Maybe I should finish introductions?”  Kame just watched in amusement.  Was his roommate really so childish?  “At least Maru and Koki are just like I remember,” thought Kame as the two started arguing, Akanishi occasionally throwing in.   He was so scared he wouldn’t know anyone so having them there meant the world to him.

But as Kame watched them, he found his gaze inexplicably sliding to his roommate.  The older had darker hair, perhaps slightly longer than his own locks.  A big, goofy grin.  Playful brown eyes, somehow both honest and guarded at the same time.  Was that even possible?  Apparently so.  What was this strange feeling?  He’d never felt anything like it.  Before he realized what he was doing, Kame found himself staring.

Until he realized Akanishi was staring back even though he was fighting with Koki and Maru.  That snapped Kame out of it.  “Mou, guys…. I already met Akanishi.  He’s my roommate.  So stop fighting, all three of you.”

“We’re not fighting, Turtle,” Koki quickly said, turning to smile sweetly at him.  Kame smiled back.  Ever since the day they met, Koki would tease him, call him ‘boyfriend’ or ‘turtle’ or both and jump up on his back.  Sometimes he’d make flirty jokes at him.  At first it was weird, having some other kid hanging on him all the time.  Then it was funny.  Somewhere along the way, it just became a thing.  It was just how Koki was.  Maru was more relaxed.  He always seemed to find Koki’s antics funny but he never said anything about it unless Koki got childish.  Er, more childish.  Well, except that one time when Koki chased that other boy off.  They were so young then...  But in Koki and in Maru as well, Kame couldn’t ask for more loyal friends.  It had been heartbreaking when his family moved away right before high school.  He really thought he’d never see them again.

Today really must be his lucky day after all.

Jin kept glancing back at Kamenashi’s face, even when he was arguing with his friends.  He thought he almost caught the younger staring at him, but he must have been mistaken because Kame looked quickly away.

Suddenly, Koki rounded on him.  “You mean, you’ve known for days who your new roommate was going to be and you didn’t tell us it was him?”

Waving his hands in front of him, Jin responded, “How was I supposed to know?  I never met him and you never mentioned him.  Not once.  Neither of you.”

At this point Yamapi interrupted, “Hey, guys.  Are we still going to the club or not?  Hey, you should come drink with us, Kamenashi.  Celebrate meeting old friends and maybe making new ones?”

Kamenashi agreed cheerfully, saying, “Just call me Kame.  Everyone does.”

This was a problem.  Jin realized he was staring at Kame again.  He just wasn’t sure why.  Well, he knew why.  He just didn’t want to admit why.  Not to others.  Not to himself.  He was pretty sure spending a lot of time with him was a bad idea.

So what should he do?  The way he saw it, he had two options.  He could go out with them, get rip-roaring drunk as quickly as possible, grab a girl and come back… or he could just not go.

Maybe he should just stay.  He could give Noriko a call.  He did promise to call her, after all.  He had lied, but… that was four days ago, true, but she might not be mad yet.  He’d have some fun and put the whole roommate issue aside for a while.

“No, not tonight, guys.  I have… stuff to do.”

“Yes, tonight.  Whoever she is can wait.  Junno, Maru, grab him.  Let’s go!”  Yamapi ordered.

“Hey, I thought you were my friends??” Jin whined as his Junno grabbed one arm and Maru grabbed the other.  “Nee, guys?  Are you listening?”  He looked imploringly over at Tatsuya.  “Tat-chan, help!”

Tatsuya put his book down.  “What?  I’m going too.”

“But you never go.”

“Almost never.  Everyone else is. I might as well.”

“Tat-chan….!” Jin whined.

And they all hurried off to the club.  Jin was cursing silently to himself.  Guess it was option A - get drunk.  These friends would be the damn death of him.
