I'm so sorry about your friend's ordeal. Just this week a fourteen year old girl in my hometown killed herself because she was being judged, bullied and taunted at school by kids who were in support of the eighteen year old who committed statutory rape against her. And then the charges against the perp were dropped because the only witness to the crime - the victim - is dead. (Reminds me of the "joke" about the man who murdered both his parents, then pleaded for mercy from the court because he was an orphan...) Needless to say, the victim's mother was ranting and raving when the TV reporters encountered her, ready to kill the bastard responsible for her daughter's death.
And now the government, in all its tender sensitivity, wants to get in on the nonconsentual groping of people who may be trying to get on with their lives after a nightmare like rape.
If you can, get a copy of this book: The Magna Carta Manifesto, by Peter Linebaugh. Available here: www.ucpress.edu ... but your local library may have a copy. It is relevant to all

As for what I'd call the U.S. government--how about "rogue" and "imperial" (makes it sound like a mad elephant)? Only losing top dog status will cure that, and maybe not even then.
Perhaps making a deal would do, say trading a few of the country's former leaders to The Hague for trial by the World Court in return for foreign lenders cancelling U.S. debt at $1trillion each.
I have been to Hague ... umm, den Haag. It's useless.
I've met elephants. When they go mad, they usually do ti singly and have very good reasons for it. Like sexual frustration. Being drunk. Being hungry. Loneliness. Humans killing relatives and friends. They never behave nastily as a policy.
People should speak up, object. US people. Otherwise this won't stop and will get worse and worse. I mean, 'm envisioning a strip search someday if this goes on.
*sigh* Why so much rape fail lately? I read that and I can fully understand her reaction. I was trying to tell my boss about it and started crying. It's kind of odd, because I no longer have any real aversion to being touched (at least, not any more than I had *before* the rape) but imagining her pain just about knocked me down. That was the sickest, saddest thing I've read in a long time.
Also, there was a recent clusterfuck on sf_d with a lot of people telling rape survivors that if they write about rape, they're contributing to rape culture and also that they're in need of mental help. Because imaginary people are way more important than the real people whose tools you're trying to take away.
Okay, I have to go find something productive to do. I'm getting all angry and depressed again. >:(
This year has been the year of suicide fail and rape fail for me. Ugh. It's left me emotionally scarred. Funny, I have never been raped, but I can get her reaction too. Maybe because I don't like to be touched much anyways, not unless I know the person very well.
