Hmmm... is not really Cantopop as much as the Canto-music business, though... non? I don't think I would consider Khalil as fully cantopop or Rubberband. The truly last Cantopop star I can clearly point out would be Aaron Kwok.
I'm still halfway through the article though. I'm gonna have to make a list of all of these and check the names I don't know out.
Maybe Cantopop is looked at the same way Jpop is in Japan. I.e. everything is Jpop, even if it's not pop, as long as it's in Japanese. That's sort of how I took it anyway.
Yeah, they do refer to Rubberband as CantoRock in the end. But the overall view is that music from HK is Cantopop xD I guess it's referring to "mainstream pop" just like people refer to Beyonce and Kanye as pop. xD
I don't think Khalil and Rubberband are part of the Cantopop scene though. While I agree that Cantopop can be generic and all about the karaoke ballads, I also don't think that idol culture was at its peak during the 2000's, and the lang mo (beautiful models) movement was popular before the Edison scandal (Maggie Q would be a prime example of beautiful models who can't really speak Cantonese/Chinese

Can you recommend some Candy Lo albums? :) I'm on a mission xD
Also, MC Jin - his section does mention the "he may not be good, but has merits" issue. - "It’s easy. Maybe not always good, but easy to play with. And people have that image. And he is encouraging the audience to come up on stage and battle with him all the time, and that starts some trends there.".
I avoid rap or hip hop in languages that I can't understand... so I just stick to English and Spanish. xD
I think the problem with Candy Lo is that she has some amazing songs on all her albums, and they all have themes, but sandwiched between those amazing songs are complete crap. So I'd recommend d/l a compilation or two before downloading her albums.
Her fans tend to think that Bat Seui Yiu...Yun Mei Dak Ho Pa or 不需要...完美得可怕 is her best work. It definitely has a more indie feel to it and one of her most famous songs is on the album. The song's name is Garbage where she compares herself and her relationship to garbage, but in an innovative way where she says that a pile of garbage will one day decompose and give life to field of flowers so while her romance might be destructive, it still leaves something good to be remembered.)
For me, her most cohesive albums were Flower Talk and Fantasy. But I do like some of her songs from Process, even though it veers on too philosophical sometimes.
My personal favorite songs from her are these though.
Sorry for the spam. XD;;; I think Candy is an under appreciated artist in the Cantopop
