I don't have any questions (yet), but I just wanted to say how pleased I am to be on break right now. I'mma be all over this place tomorrow. Hopefully some other people will have shown up by then! :D
Also, you are a star for putting this together, bb!
Hi Jess. Bothering you again because LJ has screened me. This always seems to happen to me because I seem to be the only one super interested in linking things (and it has a serious problem with Imgur). I don't even know.
At any rate, I think there is--possibly--a setting in your community options that allows you to put a stop to screening should you wish to enable that and avoid such things in the future. Alternatively, you could just stalk the threads I comment on because, inevitably, anything I post will get screened.
And thank you in advance for un-screening me. Sorry for the hassle. :-/
Things I know I need to improve upon: Coloring, cropping, breathing life back into the complex composition half of my brain, learning when to stop/balance. I dunno. Like I said in my most recent post (that's the first one linked, fyi), I think I'm at a fork in the road in terms of what my style is going to evolve into next so things are a bit uncertain and weird at the moment. Anyway, thoughts, feelings, etc. etc. Thanks!
This mission seems fraught with danger but I shall be brave and proceed onwards.
To be honest, I do love your work. My at times incoherent comments may or may not have given you a clue. So, I looked through the posts you linked and I realised that I while I do like your present work, dark with shadows and glowy and rich, I also like it when your work looks er, airy and light. You linked to a LoTS post amirite? I really loved that post. It was still you but at the same time it was wildly creative. What's more, I really liked the colouring. It was glowy and awesome but at the same time.
Not to say that I dont love your present colouring. But I kind of miss the old bright one.
Aaand, that's about it. I dont know what else to say cause the way things go, I do love your work. Sorry if I was less than helpful. My brain wasn't cooperating as much as it should have.
Okay so I love your icons obvs and I totally see your fork. That's a weird sentence, but okay like you have icons like this and this: super glowy and more similar to icons in the second and third linked posts. And then the opposite end of the spectrum in icons like this (which I personally love because I'm a big fan of the grunginess and the strange colors). I think the middle ground (and some of my very favorite icons of yours in the newest post) comes in icons like this and this and this. There's a gorgeous light to these without the obvious light blobs of some of the earlier posts, but the colors are also gorgeous and interesting, and idk I just love it so much.
I've also seen a lot of people saying that they miss your "lighter" work, but personally I love the newest couple of posts: the colors are stunning (hush about your coloring), and the dark quality of a lot of them doesn't detract from that for me.
I'm definitely trying to implement textures a little more in my upcoming work! and the former theme over at 20inspirations made me realize that I don't have to up the contrast all that much all the time (: however, I'm not sure how this is going to turn out on the long run. maybe I'll find a style that merges all that or I'll go abck and forth like I'm doing right now. either way, thank you so much for your input! it's very much appreciated ♥
The way I see it, everything you do is pretty much near flawless. You win at text. You win at composition. You win at texture use. You win at colouring. You win at posting icons regularly with each post more awesome-r than the next.
Ergo, you win at life.
This turned out to be not so much thoughts as much as a love letter. Oh well. NO SHAME.
Yeah, these are going to be more musings than general constructive criticism. I really do think your work is incredibly creative, complex, layered, and individual, Shawna. Having the pleasure of seeing how you evolved into that as well means I'm a bit emotionally attached to your style as well. I really do have all these feelings about everything. Not to mention that, you know, everything is always so lovely and amazing.
I do think it is really interesting that you've picked the posts you've picked, however. I think, maybe, it is because I have such a soft spot for some of your older stuff and you've not included much of that. This post, this one, and this post would have also probably made up a top five posts (by you) for me. Although, you know how partial I am to this icon, and thus you most likely anticipated that that post might make my list.
Anyway, I think I'm going to take a leaf of our the 20sinpirations application page, and structure the rest of my comment into sections. :D

Honestly? Honest responses would be much appreciated. Having seen some anonymous remarks floating around the place recently, any and all opinions are welcome, especially in regards to areas for improvement.
I've seen those remarks too, and I don't think there has been a decrease in quality at all in your work. I think that some people have a problem with the paleness of your latest batch? Which is gorgeous, but lacking the bright, solid colors of, say, your Dianna Agron batch (which is my favorite, personally, I think that batch is amazing). Your latest batch is really subtle which I guess some people don't like as much as the more bold style? I don't know, but it's gorgeous nonetheless ( this icon and this icon omg).
Naw, thank you Shawna! I think that - this year I kind of went into iconing with every desire to experiment, but it's been such a personal thing that my icons have just, become different each time around and so I can understand that some people don't like that, but I think it's important to know it is a phase of experimentation. And I'll take some things I like from it and move on to trying something else. And see, there's still vibrant icons (the examples you picked!), they just aren't necessarily the same kind of vibrant, haha!
These are my favs by you and holy crap do I ever love them. I am INCREDIBLY envious of your ability to use grainy textures, to integrate colour into a dark background, your close crops, your pale colouring - basically these icons are so good they make me want to cry.
So yeah, I think you're amazingly talented so I feel weird trying to critique you but I guess that's what the meme is for. These are some icons which I think missed the mark a bit:
