Monday
Foreman was the first one to come by on Monday. Wilson didn’t even hear him come in. But then he glanced up from the paperwork that had been left unfinished, and Foreman was standing there, staring at him.
“I just wanted to say…”
Wilson looked back down at the papers, the letters swirling in front of his eyes.
“If you need to talk….”
Wilson looked up at him. “I’m fine…”
“Yeah” Foreman said quietly. “But if you need to talk, well...”
“I said I’m fine.” Wilson said sharply.
Foreman stood there for a moment, but then he left. Wilson stared at the door. Then he looked back down at the papers and sighed.
Taub and Thirteen came by late in the afternoon. It had been a long day. Three new patients were admitted, two of them were children. It was always hard to admit the children, their eyes full of fear, their parents pretending to be cheery. He couldn’t even pretend to be cheery on this day. But no one died, and he was grateful for that. Also, Cuddy never came by, and he was grateful for that too.
He sat in his office, it was dark and quiet, there was little light from the window, the sun had been behind the clouds all day. He stared at the papers on his desk, but nothing made any sense. The door opened, and his heart jumped. But then he remembered.
Taub and Thirteen stood in front of him. They looked down at the floor.
“Wilson?” Taub said, quietly.
“Yeah?”
Taub and Thirteen looked at each other, then Thirteen held out an x-ray film.
“We were wondering if you could take a look at this, we wanted to ask you if that looks like a tumor” she said, pointing to a shadow on a bone.
He took the x-ray from her, looked at it for a moment, then gave it back to her.
“You know you need an MRI to know for sure” he said staring at them.
“Look” Taub said, “we just wanted to say that, well if you need to talk or something..”
“I’m fine” he snapped at them, “Did Cuddy send you?”
They looked at each other again, then they turned and left without saying another word. He put his head down in his hands.
Wilson stayed at his desk, not moving, till there was nothing but darkness. Then he stacked the papers in a neat pile, put on his rain coat, and went out to the hall. He looked at the elevator and then he turned and walked slowly down the hallway. It was late, everyone was gone. He stood at the door for a moment, looking around to make sure no was coming, then he opened the door and walked into House’s office. Everything was the same, but nothing was the same at all.
He looked at the chair, and sighed. Then he slowly walked over to House’s desk. He stared at it, a mess as usual, but with the important things still in their places. He sat down in House’s chair. He took House's watch out of his pants pocket, where it had been all day, he gently touched the face and the strap, then he closed his hand around it. He leaned back in the chair, and closed his eyes. It had been a very long day…..
Taub was the first one to arrive early the next morning. He opened the door, and stopped and stared, Wilson was still in House’s chair, the watch was still clutched tightly in his hand, his head was resting on his arm on the desk. Taub shook his head, turned and walked away, closing the door softly behind him. There was nothing to say
