Not quite what they meant...

So since I'm working in an office that is situated in a blasted wasteland (at least in terms of the food I can get to and eat in the half-hour I'm alloted for lunch), I went out and bought myself a very cute little lunchbox, made by a company called "Fit'N'Fresh". The idea is that you can fit a sandwich and some veggies and some dessert in your ( Read more... )

http://lunchinabox.net/ has some neat ideas - mostly aimed at schoolkid lunches, but still neat.

kastinkerbento has some inspiring pictures and semi-recipes, as does http://www.petitebiscotte.com/

I always had success with clementines.
That said, I approve of your current lunch, but I sense a lack of both chocolate and bacon.

Obvious: Fresh fruit.

Depending on the amount of fridge space you have at work, I've gone grocery shopping just for lunch, and kept sandwich fixins and frozen Healthy Choice TV dinners in the work fridge, or else just frozen lunch-sized leftover stuff (usually pasta or beef stew, but really any kinda leftovers works), taken 'em to work in a cooler, and microwaved 'em. But, then again, when I'm working I generally find cooking to be enough of a pain in the ass that I'd rather cook a week's worth of pasta meals and refrigerate or freeze 'em than cook much more often.

Option #3: at the last gig, there was a $20 propane grill bike-locked to the picnic table. Takes all of ten minutes to cook a tiny steak, and even less to cook hotdogs.

I always try to pack up a salad: bagged greens, chopped up baby carrots and whatever random veggies are in the fridge. Takes five minutes and is full of goodness. I also second the hummus idea - you'll get protein and veggies in you in one shot. I'm also a fan of soup or chili - make a big batch, freeze, and pull one out of the freezer and take with to microwave.

I hear you about living in a wasteland of food. I have a few option, but they are a good 15 minute walk away, so not always an option.

What I desperately need is my lunch to beep at me so that I don't accidentally leave it at home, do not accidentally throw it out with the recycling and do not accidentally leave it on one of the trains. Yes, I have done all of these things in the last two weeks.

Having bitched, I'm a huge fan of picking up cut veggies or fruit from the Korean deli in my neighborhood on the way to the subway. Yes, I'm lazy, but it's a better option than the peppers moldering in the crisper because I forgot to chop them.

if you have access to a Costco, they have an awesome bag of mini bell peppers that I was taking to work in my lunches. no cutting involved. Just grab and go. I also found that if you look to make sure they LOOK fresh when you get them at costco, they last till I eat them all and don't go bad. Sometimes this took 2 weeks.

Also Mini english cucumbers, but I like munching on fresh veggies. (and one of those did go bad, they only lasted a bit over a week)
