Maybe the problem are that you are useing the original MSoft program for MSN ing.

I use AMSN, because it lets me choose where to save an incomeing file, but some of my friends pointed out that "its not enuff pwetty", IDK but I dont care about bumpy shiny windows for an instant messenger...

An other alternative are Pidgin, what I dont like because I cant choose where to save any file what I accept, but atleast its a working alternative.

Why to use eighter AMSN or Pidgin? NO ads and other shit included and they are free software, you dont have to let MSoft install any suspicious shit on your system (as I moved to AMSN from that point).

Pidgin sí te deja elegir dónde guardás el archivo. Al menos en la versión para Linux.

Además son multiprotocolo, podés tener Google Talk y cualquier otro que tengas ahí :3.
