Vaan managed to jog up towards the shore just in time, clad in blue swim trunks and, typically, no shirt. A towel hung limply over his tanned arm. He had to admit, he was pretty proud of accomplishing the task of finding it to this spot without getting lost/run over/assaulted; it was a smart thing of him to scan over the map of campus last night before he went to bed.

He waved over at Basch, heedless of the sand kicked up by the pressure of his jogging feet.

"You look it, too," he mused, rubbing his nose. He offered the captain a playful grin - Basch must know him well enough by now.

"C'mon, no one's gonna care once we're in the water!"

That really wasn’t the point, just because nobody cared didn’t mean that he didn’t care. He was a man of neutral tones (not one word about the so called potholder, please) and he didn’t’ take well to color of green that made a cactuar look tame.

“Aye, but I will still care.” The complaints set aside; the older man peeled off the tank top and moved to join Vaan in the water. Honestly, it would have been easier to teach the younger blonde how to swim in water less turbulent, however easier wasn’t always better. The Captain knew that Vaan would go to the ocean over going to a swimming pool.

Basch was careful to only go out deep enough that the water went to his own waist. He wasn’t sure when there would be an increase in the height of the water and didn’t want to risk Vaan getting in over his head…literally. “Come out this far Vaan…”

Vaan kicked off his leather sandals and dropped his towel to the ground. With a content smile tugging at his lips, Vaan stretched his tanned limbs - man, it felt good to be out in the sun again! It wasn't too hot, either, and considering he was from Dalmasca, of all places, the weather was just right.

The water, however, was a bit more cold than Vaan had anticipated. The edges of his toes curled in distaste as the edges of the water lapped at his skin. Still, Vaan swallowed his reluctance and joined Basch, step by antagonizing step. He waded to the captain's side and admired the ever-stoic expression on the older man's face even with the temperature of the water.

"Okay...n-now what-- Wait, wait," Vaan held up a finger and, gasping in a deep breath, submerged himself completely underwater. Figured he might as well get used to the temperature now...

He emerged again, aureate locks soaked and dripping down the grin of his lips.

"Kay. Ready now."

Basch raised an eyebrow at Vaan; well he wasn’t expecting him to just dive right in that way. Though, he had to admit to himself that Vaan was rather fearless at times. He might as well give Vaan a crash course in the discipline. There was no edge or bank for Vaan to hold onto, so Basch braced himself for what was coming next.

“I want you to hold onto me….and let your legs float off the ground…” And Vaan better watch where he was grabbing, Basch would have none of that groping (though, he really couldn’t scold the boy either way.) “Once your legs are floating…I want you to point your toes and kick…”

He was going to teach Vaan one step at a time, even if it was going to be a long process and possibly an uncomfortable one.
