Every now and then, usually when I'm writing a paper, I wonder to myself why (oh why!?!?) the hell do I want to go into academics anyway. I really dislike writing papers. Maybe while you're digging you'll come up with a way to follow the parts you love without the more painful elements of the writing. Then again, you may find that writing up your own stuff is different than writing up stuff on a deadline for a course.
