One can say the same to various points for those of us pursuing advanced business and science degrees; do not simply expect to teach. The laws of supply and demand cannot be ignored.

While it's good to be more optimistic, I think it's important to go to graduate school being fully aware of articles like this. Years down the line, if you are unemployed, penniless and depressed, at least you know that you fell out of the frying pan and into the fire with your eyes open instead of somene blindfolding you.

It must be hilarious for him to tell his own undergrads, wearing their "Hope" sweatshirts/t-shirts, that they need to think twice about getting a PhD in English.

Of course, if you DO want to go on to teach, you not only need to obtain the degree, you need to interview well.

In theory if one focuses on a historical period in literature couldn't they work at a museum of some kind?
