Director/Picture splits are pretty rare. Winning Picture without being nominated for Director is reeeeeaaaaally rare.
I confess that simply by Oscar's beloved formulas I don't think it was ever in the cards for it to win (and when I heard that Lucas/Spielberg/Coppola would be presenting Director, everything kind of solidified in my mind). But don't think those formulas should suck the joy out of rooting for the home team... as Ferrell and Black so aptly instructed ya, comedy doesn't usually get its shake at the Oscars -- the only comedy to win in the past fifty-or-so years has been "Annie Hall". While the nomination may not have been attached with wings to the top, it's clearly a testament of people's love for the film that it could be nominated in a field traditionally rather exclusionary toward that genre.
