Chapter 15

---- At the hospital ---- Ville

Have you ever noticed how no matter where you are, hospitals have that horrible, wretched smell to them? Something about it is so unnerving.

My shoes clicked lightly against the linoleum tiles as I made my way down the hospital halls. The nurse had said that Bam was in room 204.

For some reason, I couldn’t stop the shaking in my hands. My entire body was aching, my stomach turning, my head pounding. Driving to the hospital had been quite difficult. I was unable to keep my mind focused on the road, my thoughts kept wandering to memories of Bam and I. All I could think was that this better not be the last time that I see him. I can’t lose him now.

I finally arrived at the door and opened it slowly. Ape and Phil were sitting beside his bed. Ape had one hand placed on Bam's chest, her other hand clutching a tissue. She lifted it and dabbed her eyes with it, she’d obviously been crying for awhile.

“Hey Ville… glad you could come. Sit over here,” Phil said while pulling up a chair next to him.

I had been informed earlier that Bam had been in a drunk driving accident. As I sat down, pangs of guilt throbbed through my chest. If pnly they knew that this was my fault. But there was no way to explain that without exposing all of Bam’s secrets. So I said nothing.

“He’s not doing too well. He’s been unconscious for awhile now… they’re not sure if he’s going to wake up… ever,” Ape said calmly, but once she’d finished, heaving sobs escaped her mouth and tears poured down her cheeks.

I gave her a hug and placed my hand on the back of her head, “Shhh.. it’s okay Ape. Things will work out, you’ll see,” I said softly against the side of her face.

We sat for a moment, no one saying anything, all of us just staring at the shape of Bam’s body, resting underneath the white cotton sheets.

“May I have a moment alone with him… if it’s not too much to ask?”

“Of course Ville, we ought to go get something to eat anyway,” Ape replied.

They exited the room and I moved my chair closer to his bed. He looked so peaceful. But I remembered where we were, I remembered that we were here because he had been badly injured.

There was an IV that ran from his arm, down the side of the bed and hooked onto a pole. Machines made quiet beeping noises. The screens for the monitors showed various temperatures and health statistics on them.

I brushed the back of my hand down the side of his face. His skin was so soft. I recalled what it was like to run my hands over every inch of that body that now lay motionless. I remembered his bright, round eyes, always shinning with excitement. His smile that always held something deviant behind it.

Leaning down, I lightly kissed his lips. I laid my head next to his on the pillow. Tears began to flow from my eyes. I loved this man so much. He can’t leave. I can’t believe what I did. How could I have done this to him. God, I’d never knew that I could care this deeply for someone.
