Us and Them
Us, and them
“Ville,” Bam whispered as he shook the older mans shoulder gently.
“Vil, common get up…We gotta go.” His words got no louder but the fear in his voice was much more obvious.
Ville’s eyes fluttered opened and for a moment relief flooded Bam’s face.
Ville sat up and quickly noticed all of they’re things packed into two suitcases sitting by the door.
Following his gaze Bam sighed, “We’ve gotta get out of here, they found out about us.”
Bam held onto Ville’s hand tightly as climbed down the stairs into the basement of his vast mansion.
The green eyed man looked around them as they reached the bottom. He’d been the last person Bam had woken, so all the others were already there.
In the dim candle light he looked over them, Burton and Linde were standing against a wall, shoulders brushing together.
Ryan, Dico, Rabb, and Rake stood quietly in the corner trying to draw some comfort from just being near each other.
Novak was sitting against the far wall; next to him on the floor was the open escape hatch.
Before Ville could look over the rest of the people, Novak stood and made his way over to him and Bam.
“Everyone’s here and we’re all ready to go.”
and after all were only ordinary men.
Me and you.
Bam nodded, “Let’s get going then.”
The two made they’re way to the hatch.
Bam released Ville’s hand and Ville moved to the side so everyone could see the blue eyed man clearly.
Bam cleared his throat and any other noise immediately stopped.
“Before we go, I’d like to say a few things to you all.” the volume of his voice was just barely above a whisper and so everyone crowded closely around him.
“For many of you, if not all of you, tonight will be the most terrifying night of you’re life. It will take about 10 minuets to reach the other side of the escape tunnel. From there we’ll have to get through the woods and then meet up with another group on the other side. We’ll go with them to they’re base, we’ll be safe there, at least for now. We have two flashlights and 18 people. I’ll be at the front with one and Nudie will be at the back with the other. You’ll all have to be absolutely silent if they here us, we’re dead.”
He paused and looked around and noticing the tears in many people’s eyes he continued,
“I know how hard it is; knowing some of us might not make it till morning. Knowing you might not make it, but we have to do this. And we have to stay strong.
We’ve all lost people already, friends, family, lovers, and its hard, it hurts, but for there sake we need to keep moving.
God only knows it’s not what we would choose to do.
Forward he cried from the rear
Now I’m no preacher, I’m probably the farthest thing from one, but I wanted to take a minuet before we left, to read off a list of the people we’ve lost so,”
Bam looked over his friends, he felt tears start to form in his own eyes and wiped them away before taking a slip of notebook paper out of his pocket and reading the names,
“Mige, Gas, Jess, April, Phil, Christus, Snack, Anitti, Jussi, Ehren, Glomb, Steve-O, Larry, Jay, Ville L, Haiwe, Jaakko, Tommi, Oskari”
And the front rank died.
And the general sat and the lines on the map
Jonne let out a loud wail and Dunn quickly ran over slapping a hand over the smaller mans mouth before pulling him into an embrace.
The others stood in silence, Ville, Novak, Ryan, Linde, Burton, Rake, Rabb, Dico, Chad, Deron, Missy, Jimmy, Jarred, Jonne, Jyrki, Johnny, Chris, and himself.
They were the only ones left, many of them still unsure if they’re family and friends who they’d left behind to come here had survived.
Moved from side to side.
Black and blue
“We need to go now.” Bam held his hand out and Ville grabbed onto it.
They climbed down the stairs into the tunnel one by one until they were all below.
Bam and Novak both turned on they’re flashlights and Novak closed the hatch locking it so no one could follow.
The group moved quickly and quietly through the tunnel.
As they exited the tunnel the flashlights were turned off and Bam waved them all over to him.
And who knows which is which and who is who.
Up and down.
“The woods are patrolled at night so we have to be very careful. I’ll stay in front.” He whispered
“Keep you’re ears and eyes open. If you see anything tell me or Nudie. The only reason I want you to make ANY noise is if you see an officer. I know it’s dangerous but if you see one I want you to scream a warning as loud as you can. It doesn’t matter they see you first or not. It’s better to run from them than to try and sneak past them.”
Ville turned to the rest of the group and smiled before starting to walk.
They were about half way through the field when he saw them, 2 officers on top of a small hill.
But in the end its only round and round.
Haven’t you heard it’s a battle of words?
Ville panicked he pulled on Bam’s arm and pointed towards them.
Bam’s eyes widened as he spotted them as well,
“RUN!” he screamed. He tightened his grip on Ville’s hand and without a second glance took off.
The sound of gunshots rang out as the two officers opened fire on them.
There was a pained cry followed by a thud behind them.
“Jonne! Keep running please keep running!” Missy screamed as Jonne stood and stared in horror as Ryan fell to the ground.
“JONNE PLEASE” She started to run back to get him but Chris beat her to it, scooping the blonde Finn into his arms as he ran past.
Jonne stared behind them as he was carried away, Ryan, Jyrki, Rake, Burton and Deron lay in the leaves slowly fading from his sight.
The poster bearer cried?
Listen son, said the man with the gun
The shots faded as they reached the other side of the woods.
There were tree men and a large truck waiting for them,
“Start the truck we’re being chased!” Bam cried as they approached.
The men jumped up quickly. One getting into the drivers seat and starting the truck the others opening the back so they could all get inside.
Bam and Ville were the first in, followed closely by, Johnny, Chad, Dico, Rabb, Linde Novak, Missy Chris and Jonne.
Jarred reached the truck last Jimmy cradled in his arms, “He got hit in the leg.”
One of the men, a tall brunette with kind grey eyes nodded and took the injured singer from him.
There’s room for you inside.
I mean, they’re not gonna kill ya, so if you give em a quick short,
Sharp, shock, they wont do it again. Dig it? I mean he get off
lightly, cause I would’ve given him a thrashing - I only hit him once!
It was only a difference of opinion, but really...I mean good manners
don’t cost nothing do they, eh?
Down and out
The drive to the new safe house was silent. The only noise being the occasional whimper from the injured Jimmy.
“A school?” Bam’s question broke the silence as they pulled up to a large building.
The driver, a large man who looked to be in his mid 40’s turned and looked back at the skater.
“You’d be surprised how much security there is. It’s perfect really.”
Bam nodded and climed out of the truck with the rest of the group.
It can’t be helped but there’s a lot of it about.
With, without.
Hours later Bam, Ville, The driver who’d they’d come to know as Peter and a man by the man of Luke sat in the old teachers lounge,
“So how long were you at your last safe house?” Luke asked, as he sipped his coffee.
“Since it started actually, it was my house.” Bam answered before turning to Peter.
“How’d you guys get here? And how many of you are there?”
Peter smiled, “We got here about two months ago and there are about 20 of us. My turn then.” He smiled and Bam let out a small laugh. “Sure.”
“What about your friend here, he’s been pretty quiet.”
The smile fell from Bam’s face, “You don’t know who he is?”
Luke shook his head, “Should we?”
“Yeah actually, you probably should. He’s Ville Valo.”
He paused to let the information sink in.
“He, he, He’s VILLE VALO!” Peter stuttered out looking at Ville in awe.
Bam nodded, “Yep, He’s Ville alright.”
“The Ville Valo, As in “The Angel” that Ville Valo.” Luke chocked out.
Bam nodded again, “Yeah, so I’m guessing you know why he’s so quiet.”
“After they took Finland he put messages into his songs then sent them out under the code name “Angel” to try and warn everyone. They found out and used him as an example.” Peter muttered
“They took away his voice.”
Bam took hold of Ville’s hand and Luke gasped, “That means your Bam!”
Peter chuckled, “Well I’ll be damned. Now I wish I’d cleaned up a bit better. The Angel and his keeper, guests in my safe house.”
And who’ll deny it’s what the fighting’s all about?
Out of the way, it’s a busy day
“This war is far from over Bam. You know that right.” Peter took a drag form his cigarette and handed it over too the skater.
“Yeah I know. You know when they started saying that this whole thing could turn into world war three I thought it was total bullshit. Then all of the sudden it was here and Ville was this god and now look at us.”
He handed the cigarette back to the older man and let out a loud laugh, “God that made no fucking sense.”
Peter laughed along, “No it didn’t. But I think I know what you mean. How did you end up “The keeper” anyway?”
Bam smiled, “Well me and Ville have been good friends for a long time and when the other guys in his band decided to get him out of Finland they asked me to hide him. I agreed and well, we got closer while he was hiding. Fell in love or whatever. I’d do anything to protect him and so suddenly I was almost as important as Vil’ is!”
He sighed and lit up another cigarette.
I’ve got things on my mind.
For the want of the price of tea and a slice
Ville pulled out a blank sheet of paper and a pen.
“Writing the next broadcast?” Bam walked over and sat down next to the Finn.
Ville nodded and started to write.
“I’ll record it later and send it out tomorrow morning.” the skater wrapped his arms around him.
“Love you.”
Ville turned and placed a kiss on Bam’s lips. ‘I love you to.’ he mouthed.
Bam smiled and placed his head on his lovers shoulder. Reading along as Ville wrote.
The old man died.
