insane4him Chapter 10 “Trapped”
“Jesse? Jesse?” Panic coursed through his whole body as he tried desperately to find where his little brother had run off to. Ville had already looked in both of the rooms, under all of the beds, in both bathrooms, in each and every trunk at the end of all the beds and found no sign of him. All Ville had done was close his eyes for a minute to rest after chasing Jesse around for a half hour trying to tag him back and when he had opened his eyes, Jesse had disappeared! A horrible thought entered his mind. What if he had gone outside the room and got caught! Mr. Tuoni was mean, cruel and foul-mouthed so there was no doubt in Ville’s mind that he was capable of doing something evil.
He rushed over to the door of the room and making sure to be quiet; he carefully turned the knob and pried it open. Peeking through the crack, he saw no one in the hall, but just as he was about to step through the doorway to have a look down the stairs, he heard someone coming up the stairs. His heart jumped into his throat and as quickly as he shut the door and ran to hid under his bed.
Not only was someone coming up the stairs, but they were running up them! Within just a few seconds the person had flung open the door and hurried into the room.
Little shoes! They certainly weren’t Jesse’s, but they weren’t Mr. or Mrs. Tuoni’s shoes either, which meant that it was pretty safe to come out.
“Ville”, called a rather feminine voice. “Ville where are you?
Recognizing the sweet little voice as Jonne’s, he crawled out from under the bed. “Here.”
“Ville, Jesse got caught! I think he was trying to get something from the kitchen or something, but Mrs. Tuoni saw him.”
Ville’s pale face lost all of the little color it had. “What did she do?”
“She took him outside and locked the door. She said no one was allowed to even go near him or they would be chained out there too.”
“What do you mean chained?! She chained Jesse up?!” As well as being terrified for his brother, he felt more anger than he even knew was possible to feel at Mrs. Tuoni. There was still nearly 3 inches of snow outside and he knew you could get really sick from being out there for so long. He tried to push past Jonne but he wouldn’t let him go.
“No! You might be chained too! You can’t go out there!” Jonne pleaded with him to stay, but Ville would have none of it.
“I have to go Jonne! You don’t understand! I can’t leave him alone!” Ville shouted as he strained against Jonne, but then suddenly relaxed. Jonne held him a moment longer and then relaxed his grip as well.
“You can’t just go. If she sees you you’ll be put out there too, not even next to him or anything, but freezing out there on your own!”
“I don’t care!” He shouted and rushed past Jonne and down the steps. So many stairs! For a moment he thought he was never going to reach the bottom and when he did, no one was in sight. Not a single person. This, he thought, was a good thing. He thought he might have time to look for the key to unlock the door and the chains that were apparently holding his younger brother. This posed a problem though, where to start looking? Yet an even bigger problem was: what if he had been wasting his time because she had the keys? What if she had taken them and hidden them away? Or worse yet, if she had them on her person! There would be no way to get them away from her then. But that kind of thought certainly wasn’t helping him right now. Tossing those thoughts aside, he rushed over to the nearest table with a drawer. He pulled it open and all that met his eyes were paperwork and a few unsharpened pencils. He pushed aside the papers, looking for anything even remotely key shaped. He found nothing. He searched through every drawer in the kitchen, hoping that they might have a junk-drawer or something and still didn’t find the thing that he sought.
Afraid that someone would be coming around soon, he only had one place left that he could check before he chanced trying to find the Tuoni’s room and looking there. Both Mr. and Mrs. Tuoni had a few coats hanging on the coat hooks by the front door. He knew that sometimes people left things like money and keys in the pockets of such jackets, so he knew that it was worth a try. He only got two steps towards the coats before he saw Mrs. Tuoni coming out of one of the hallways. He stopped mid-step and tried not to be noticed as he was still almost behind the wall of the kitchen, but she saw him all the same.
A slow, cruel smile crawled onto her face. “Well, well. What do we have here? The eldest little Mr. Valo, looking for your little shit brother, are you?” Her face fell and then she rushed at him. Too stiff from being so still, he couldn’t run away in time and she grabbed his arm and dragged him towards the back door. Reaching into her right pocket she pulled out a cluster of keys. Her fingers quickly found the correct key and she unlocked the door.
“Isn’t it lucky for you then that I am taking you to him?”
Ville thought for a moment that he might get what he had wanted in the first place, to go outside and be with his little brother and to be there to comfort him in whatever way possible. Get close enough to him to help keep him warm, but to his horror, halfway through opening the door, she paused. Another terrible grin spread across her face,
“I have a better idea.” Quickly she shut the door that he so desperately wanted to go through and relocked it. She shoved the keys back into her pocket. Tightening her grip on his arm, she marched him back towards the kitchen and through a dark hall, leading to the east wing of the house. So far as he could tell from the few days he had been here, no one ever went on this side of the house.
Through a maze of hallways and staircases she led him. Even though there were windows, no light came through them. These windows were painted over many times to make sure that there wasn’t so much as a crack of light. On the third floor she turned to the right down another hallway and left into one of the three doors there.
She unlocked the door and slowly opened it. She sneered at him and shoved him through, locking the door again behind him. All he could do was stare unbelieving at the door for a few moments. Then all of a sudden, realization of what she had just done, hit him.
She had locked him in here! Far, far away from his little brother! He couldn’t see him through the one tiny window in the room because like all the others, it was painted over. Couldn’t hear his cries because he was so very far away! She was keeping him from taking care of Jesse!
He frantically began to pound his fists against the door. Fruitlessly yes, but he couldn’t possibly just sit there and wait for her to come back and let him out. Not while Jesse was in an even worse situation!
