I was surprised when you told me you loved me. When those three words escaped your lips and went straight to my heart, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We became more attached than we ever were beforehand. So shocked I was when you held me close and whispered how much you cared for me, and how you loved me from the moment we’d met in London so many years ago.
I was surprised when you proposed to me that fateful September night on my thirtieth birthday. How you got down on one knee, your emerald eyes sparkling with tears as you asked to be mine forever and always. I accepted of course; loving you was the only thing I wanted to do for the rest of eternity. As you slipped the silver band around my ring finger, I could only wonder if this is what heaven was like.
I was surprised when she showed up at the wedding, so many Finnish curses spewing out of her mouth in less than a second, before begging you to take her back. The whole church was silent as she pleaded with you, told you I wasn’t worth all the trouble, all while we were standing at the altar. After a few minutes, I snapped, becoming a ‘bridezilla’ if you will, and dragged that bitch out of the church by her hair. A little dramatic, I know, but I couldn’t have anything ruining my wedding day.
I was surprised the day that I found out I was pregnant with our little bundle of joy. Nine months of agony and weird food cravings later, out came our little Leah May. She’s been attached at the hip to us since, even so many years later. She’s all grown up now, with a husband and a child of her own, our grandson Ville Cole.
I was surprised that morning when I woke up with you in my arms, to discover you’d stopped breathing during the night. Your asthma finally kicked your ass in your old age, after all those cigarettes during your twenties and thirties. The headline still runs through my head every so often, ‘Finnish Singer Valo Dies at 71’ and a tear comes to my eye.
I’m not surprised that I’m dying without you here.
