Chapter 2 “Sleep Well”

It had taken quite a while to calm him down, but by the time it was done, Ville decided that it was probably best if they didn’t go to the police station.  He knew from watching TV that police asked a lot of questions and the people who were being asked those questions generally ended up crying.  So instead he decided to go to his friend Erkki’s house.  His Momma was really nice and he figured she would know what to do.

Turning onto Inari Street, he paused on the corner and listened to his tummy grumble from hunger.  “Just a few more houses Jesse,” he sighed.  Jesse sniffled.

Continuing down the street he had to readjust how he was carrying Jesse.  When he finally did reach their door, he knocked quietly and waited.  No one answered, but what did he expect?  It was after midnight.  A tiny little knock on the door would never be heard, so he tried again, this time ringing the doorbell.  He cringed slightly at how loud the bell seemed at night.  When he heard a soft rustling sound coming from inside the house he knew, he knew someone was coming.

“Who in the world could it be at this late hour?” he heard a lady’s voice whisper, then he heard the lock click and watched as the door opened.  It was Mrs. Paikkala.  Looking down at them, she looked surprised and didn’t say anything for a moment.  Jesse opened his eyes again to look up at her.  “What are you boys doing here?  Where’s your mother?”

Ville fidgeted around a little somewhat uncomfortable by the questions.  “C-can we come in?” he stammered shyly.

She looked confused for a moment and then as if realizing finally what was going on she said “Oh, of course.  Come in, it’s freezing out there!” as she ushered them inside.

Once inside, the warmth enveloped them, but because they were outside so long, the heat hurt and stung their skin, but neither one complained.  Ville, at least, was just glad to be somewhere familiar and friendly.

“Would you like some hot cocoa?”

Jesse’s tear-streaked face brightened a bit and he nodded that he would indeed like some.  Ville nodded politely and then they were both down the hall to the back of the house where the kitchen was.

“Go ahead and make yourselves comfortable.  I’ll just put the kettle on the stove.”

“Okei,” and with that he took Jesse over to the couch and relieved himself of the weight of his brother.  The moment Jesse hit the soft cushions he fell asleep.  Ville knelt down in front of the couch and watched him sleep for a few moments and softly brushed his hair away from his face.  “I’ll never leave you,” he whispered softly to the sleeping boy and then got up and walked over to the island that separated the living room from the kitchen and sat down on the barstool.  Looking over his shoulder once more to make sure he was really okei, he said quietly, “he’s asleep now Mrs. Paikkala.”

She nodded to him and took the kettle off the stove so that it wouldn’t whistle and wake him up.  “It’s hot enough,” she whispered, “Marshmallows?”

“No thank you.”  He watched as she poured the steaming water into two of the three mugs she had on the counter and then measure out the cocoa, sugar, and milk.  She slowly stirred the contents of the mugs and them picked them up and walked over to the seat next to him.  He gratefully took the cup she handed him and blew on the liquid while stirring it just as his mother had taught him.

They sat in silence for a while as they sipped their cocoa.  Ville knew that Mrs. Paikkala wanted to ask some questions but she was giving him time to collect himself before she asked him anything.  Slowly he lifted his eyes from his half empty mug and looked into her face, preparing for the questions and signaling that he was ready to answer them.

Looking straight back at him with a kind face she asked, “where is your mother?”

His eyes flashed down to his lap and then looked back up to her face.  She looked at him intently and he slowly began to open his mouth to speak.  “She’s… she’s… dead.” He whispered so quietly that she had to strain to hear him, but hear him she did.

She gasped and raised her hand to cover her heart, tears now brimming in her eyes.  Still slightly shocked she couldn’t yet speak.  Then regaining her voice, “Anita is… is dead?” she asked, still unbelieving.

He nodded slightly, “yes…”

“Oh! Oh Ville!  You poor baby, come here!”  She opened her arms to him as a tear fell down her cheek.  He moved into her embrace and tried to find comfort as she tried to provide it, but e just couldn’t.  She stroked his hair and kissed his forehead, but it just wasn’t the same.  But he sat there all the same.  His mother and Mrs. Paikkala had been very close friends and he knew that she now needed comfort as well.  Carefully she pulled away from him and wiped away her tears.  Collecting herself she said, “you can both sleep in the guest room if you like.  Kalevi and Erkki will be home tomorrow afternoon.  We’ll talk about what to do then, okei?”

He nodded again and followed her as she got up.  She walked over to the sleeping boy and gently picked him up.  He was startled for a moment in his dreams, but he did not awaken.  She carried him down the hall to the left of the entry hall to the guest bedroom.

“Flip the light-switch please?”  She requested in a murmur.

He reached for it and turned on the small lamp next to the bed.  “Thank you…”

“For what sweetie?”

“For letting us stay here… for the night.”  He said timidly.

“Oh honey, you can stay here for as long as you need.  Like I said, we’ll talk about what to do when my husband gets home.  Okei?  Now you need to get some sleep, and just get up anytime you want to in the morning.”

“Okei.”  Ville then crawled into the bed and cuddled with his brother.

“Sleep well Ville.”

Nodding slightly he put his head on his pillow and fell asleep.
