He paid the cab driver as quickly as he could and jumped out of the cab. Swiftly as his legs could take him, Ville made his way into the hospital and up to the second floor. When Missy had told him what happened, he couldn’t believe it, of all the people in the world it had to be him. Pulling a piece of paper from his pocket Ville found the room number.
“211" he whispered over and over to himself, searching frantically for the room.
The door was three quarters of the way closed, with trembling hands, Ville reached out and knocked quickly before pushing it open.
“Ville!!” Blue eyes shined at him from a pale, gaunt face. He smiled at the figure on the bed, and looked over to his parents. Bam was staring at him like he was a ghost and Missy looked relieved. “Mommy! Daddy! Look! Ville came to see me!”
Cole Margera should have been a hyper active six year old. Cole should’ve been playing catch with his father or some other sentimental shit on this Saturday morning. Instead, he was here, in the hospital waiting for a transplant because his own feeble heart would not last him through his life.
“Hi Cole.” He started, walking toward the bed. “How are you feeling today?” The boy smiled weakly and replied.
“I hurt.” If possible Ville’s heart broke even more for the little boy. Bam didn’t look like he was doing much better. Ville reached out and touched Cole’s cheek for a moment.
“How about you get some rest, and I’ll have a surprise for you later.” Nodding eagerly, Cole closed his eyes.
“What are you doing here?” Bam asked. His voice was shaky, full of sorrow, but of course, how could it not have been? Ville walked towards the couple sitting on a small couch and sat on the arm.
“She called me.” Ville pointed to Missy and smiled softly, she looked like death warmed over right now. Bam looked to his wife and Ville saw their hands entwine and squeeze one another. “Bam, Missy, I don’t know what to say.”
“That’s okay, we don’t know what to say most of the time either.” Bam smiled and Missy stood up slowly, letting Bam’s hand fall from hers. “I’m going to go to the cafeteria, want anything?”
“No.” Bam said, his gaze had trailed back over to his son. He looked thinner too, Ville hated to see them like this.
“Ville?”
“No thank you.” She nodded and pressed a kiss to Cole’s head before leaving the room.
The two men sat in silence for a long time. Neither knowing what to say.
“Bammie...” Ville started and slipped down onto the couch next to his friend who looked ready to burst into tears.
“It’s so hard Willa. It’s so hard.” Bam slumped into Ville, who secured him within his arms. “I’m so afraid.”
“I am too.” Ville pressed a kiss into Bam’s hair. “I am too.”
“When she comes back, I need to talk to you, alone.”
“Alright, we’ll go outside so I can have a smoke.” Bam nodded and let his head fall onto Ville’s shoulder.
Ville let his hand rub circles over Bam’s back, he was aching for a cigarette, but they didn’t want to leave Cole alone. Missy entered the room, looking the same as before.
“They’re both sleeping.” Ville said softly and Missy nodded, moving next to her child. “I’m so sorry Missy.”
“Thanks Ville. He’s so strong.” She said, letting her slim fingers run through Cole’s dark hair. He looked exactly like his father. “I wish I could be as strong as he is.”
“You are. If not stronger, you’re here for him and you love him and you haven’t given up hope. That’s strength to me.” Missy smiled and Cole whimpered in his sleep. “Everything will be alright.” She sniffled and sat down in the chair beside Cole’s bed.
“I’m glad you came. He needs you.” And she wasn’t talking about Cole.
When a nurse entered the room, Bam woke up and wiped at his eyes. The nurse chatted cheerily with Missy and Cole, while the two men stood and stretched.
“Ville’s going to have a smoke, and I want some infected fresh air.” She smiled at his small joke and nodded. “See you in a bit,” he told her and kissed her temple, then directing his look to his son, he shook his finger at him and said. “You’d better behave young man.” His mock tone made Cole giggle and forget about the needle in his arm.
They sat on the most secluded bench they could find. Ville was staring at the ground, a cigarette between his fingers. The awkward silence was killing him, after he took another drag of his cigarette he looked at Bam.
“What did you need to talk to me about?”
“Can you make yourself love someone?” He asked softly, he was staring at the ground too, twirling a twig between his fingers. The question was so off the wall, it didn’t make sense.
“What?” It was the only thing Ville could think to say.
“Can you make yourself love someone? It’s not that difficult.” Bam looked at Ville for just a second before returning his sad eyes to the ground.
“No, Bam. You can’t make yourself love someone, just like you can’t stop loving someone. Either way, in the end, someone’s heart is getting broken.” Bam was quiet for a few moments.
“What if my heart’s already broken? I don’t think it can break anymore.” Choking a sob back, Bam continued. “He’s so sick Ville, and there’s nothing I can do. There’s nothing she can do. We can’t do anything and we fight all the time. So if I can’t make myself love someone, what do I do?”
“What are you saying?”
“I don’t love her. I mean, I do, but I don’t.” Ville let his cigarette fall to the ground and toed it out. “What do I do Willa? I can’t leave her. Our son is sick.”
“Have you talked to her about it?”
“When she’s screaming I can’t get a word in edgewise. I’m so sick of all this. I just want Cole to be healthy again, I just want everything to be like it used to be.”
“I think we all wish it could be that way sometimes. I know I do.” Ville glanced over at Bam and felt his chest tighten. If everything went back to the way it used to be, Ville wouldn’t have let himself love Bam the way he did.
“What do you do if the person you love is right in front of you, but completely out of reach?” They must’ve been on the same wave length, because Ville was thinking almost the exact same thing. “Ville?”
“That, Bam, is one of life’s greatest questions.”
“Has it happened to you?” Their eyes locked.
“Yes.” Ville said, focusing on breathing and Bam’s blue eyes.
“When?” Bam moved closer.
“Now.” Ville whispered and dropped his lips to Bam’s.
“Papa, what we doing here?” Three year old, bundle of curls, Vivian looked at her father from her place on his hip.
“This is where Daddy likes to leave flowers for your brother.”
“He’s in Heaven, huh?” Ville nodded to the child as she squirmed to be put down. He watched as she toddled over to where Bam sat next to the black gravestone.
“Hey baby girl.” He whispered and pulled her into his lap.
“Daddy no cry. No be sad.” She said kissing his cheek. He smiled and nuzzled her nose with his.
“I’m not sad, I just miss him.” She nodded and leaned against him. “Love you, baby.” They sat there for a few moments, and all turned to look when they heard a car pull up and turn off. Missy, her husband and their two children exited the car and made their way over to Cole’s grave.
“Hey Missy.” Bam smiled at his ex-wife.
“Hi, Bam, Ville, Vivy.” The little girl in Bam’s arms giggled. She liked that nickname and cocked her head to the side.
“Papa! Say hi to Aunt Missy!” Ville loved it when Vivian chided him, it was all too cute. He went to Missy and kissed her cheek.
“Hello Aunt Missy. Are you okay?”
“It’s getting better with time. I miss him, but the three of them keep me busy.” She smiled at her new family.
“I know exactly what you mean.” Ville smiled.
