I awake to a high piercing alarm. The noise is unbearable and everywhere. It fills all available space in the room, burying itself under things and saturating fabric in its wailing. I’m being violated by sound.
As abruptly as it started, it stops and silence weighs heavily upon me. Wildly, I look around for Ville and see him lying still on the other bed, next to mine. I sit up, about to rise and go to him, but the doctor gently holds me down, shaking his head sadly at me.
Tears roll down my cheeks, as much in acknowledgement of the pain that moving my bruised and cracked body caused as the other secret, unbearable pain of my shattered heart.
