So, as I sat down to do my usual daily goal of 3,000 words a day (why mess with a good thing, right?), I realized that, since I was starting from 46,138 words that would put me at 49,138. And if I was going to go for 49,138, why the heck shouldn't I write the extra 832 words and get to 50,000? After all, the "official" goal of NaNoWriMo is 50,000

And - what worked for me (since I haven't tried the word wars): Click on Team 2005, sort by Word Count in Descending order. Don't fill in any other fields. Then, find your name, and try to beat the person ahead of you, or a person you recognize, or get to the other page, or a person whose name is inspiring or irritating.
It gets addicting. Really addicting. And those people keep writing too, so then you lose your place again.
