Today it turns out that English police officers are instructing their dogs in German and two twins separated by birth married each other by accident. Usually I say you can't make this stuff up but in the second case I imagine that you can ( Read more... )

but princeton would make you throw up every day. hypercaro January 13 2008, 03:30:24 UTC
you remain not only one of the best writers i know, but one of the best writers i have ever read. the only sentence in this entire entry that irked me was the one denouncing your prose as clumsy. i think it's taken on an almost v. woolf quality (perhaps the semi-colons, she thought) in your ripe old age.

yesterday i cried because i live in the country that houses the Ivy League. in my heart, after the top tier of sadness, the one where people i don't know suffer needlessly, comes the close (& not unrelated) second: the sadness of your values are not our values (!), the sadness of people are snobs about things that are not right, that are obviously wrong. instilled snobbery. my friend just got into yale & says things like "now i can be an old blue." your values, friend?

that was the most earnest, trite thing i've ever said. i hope.

hey. am i one of those two or three people for whom this entry was halfway intended?

Yes, you were. Thank you for saying those lovely things. I'm slowly beginning to take my own college on its own merits, rather than feeling like it was a letdown to go here or that I'm only here "for the money," or something like that. It's easy for me to imagine that I might be happier at a different college, or that I lost out somehow by not getting into the Ivy League, but I don't know if that's true or not. I am doing pretty well at Denison. I found out about thirty minutes ago that I'm apparently a junior now due to Large Amounts of Credits, and look forward to reaping this in terms of housing lottery benefits, if nothing else.

At any rate, I might be living in New York this summer for an internship. Right now that's my top location, followed by Chicago and so on, and Portland is on my list too. How close is Reed to Portland?

reed is in portland but not in downtown. like, bike ride distance. bus distance. walking distance if it's very nice outside & you have free time. if you were still there in late august i would see you. you could show me the cool places to get coffee & so forth.

if you're in new york, as ever, i will also see you. this time we will not battle complex new jersey transit!

good luck with housing lotteries. of what do they consist? are you fighting for a single? for a room in the dorm closest to the woods? are there woods? i hope there are woods.

i must agree. there is a strong v. woolf quality to your writing. one i wish i could incorporate into my own, on my quest to the new yorker magazine. maybe i should read more capote as well.

and in terms of being ashamed of the college you go to, i just got back from israel. there is no W in the hebrew language. not only had all my israeli friends never heard of wellesley, they couldn't pronounce it either. to them, i might as well have gone to college in a distant, far away secularized galaxy. and in fact, their image may be rather precise.

i've been reading your stuff off and on for years through expresos's friends page. (he is a dear friend and former student and, incidentally, an ivy-attender, though the longer he's there the less the name matters to him.) echoing above, i think your writing is gorgeous. wanna be random eljay friends? i'm happy to tell you more about myself if you're creeped out or if you just want to continue writing to people you know.

Hello

Visiting Cracow has been always big problem when you think of apartamenty kraków. Really they are quite expensive and it's hard to search in center of city
