I think the end of this one was actually an ending and not a lead in to another book. Shock! Horror!
For an animal hater, Jess seems to have quite a maternal instinct whenever the plot summons it. She also baby sat a baby bear in a super special where they were interns at a zoo.
YAY! I'm so glad you recapped this, it was my favorite as a kid.
Why are horses in books almost always Arabians or Thoroughbreds? Thunder being a quarter horse was a nice change of pace, but I'm tired of so many black Arabians in particular. I never thought of them as being particularly rare, though, I've seen a handful in my day...though not as many as I've seen written about in books. Also, I know they're distinctive-looking, but how is it that book characters with minimal horse knowledge can pinpoint a horse's breeding in SECONDS? Carole Hanson is the only book character who should be able to do that. One of those random things that always shows up in books and drives me nuts.
And if Ted can't pick apart a student's position (or figure out that his horse is being thrown by shadows) without input from a random passer-by, he should not be giving lessons.
My favorite breed is the Arabian, because they tend to be like me. Stubborn, flighty, high-strung, and gorgeous. (Nix on the last part for me, I'm not gorgeous :p ).
But black horses and black Arabians seem to be the norm. And the one-girl Thoroughbreds...
Aww, I loved this book when I was a kid. This really was one of my favorites of the SVT series, I was so glad to see it recapped : ) And it's also another book that shows Jessica as less-than-sociopathic, which is a nice change of pace
