re Gaga

I am addicted to a handful of her songs and the rest I can't stand, so she's obviously a love it or hate it type of artist. I also don't get all the crazy videos, antics, outfits, etc. But don't let karabou see us talking like this. She'll cut a bitch :-D

No, I don't hate her at all. I think she's kind of neat. But I don't understand the ~love~ I'm seeing for her. Her music is good dance music, but not terribly interesting, from a lyrical perspective. I was just surprised, after all I'd heard about how AMAZING she was, to watch a couple videos and realize...this is just dance pop! I mean, it's fun dance pop, but nothing groundbreaking.

I know I disliked her from the start because I thought the lyrics were dumb. Though her admitting that she's not trying to be a grand lyricist kind of eased it. Then Just Dance infiltrated my brain and I couldn't stop singing along to it.

I think the mad love for her is the theatrics and then it snowballs into how prolific she is. karabou once posted a graphic that someone made about her pointing out how people thought she wouldn't be respected in music; she performed with Elton John at the Grammys and met the Queen of England. She wouldn't sell albums; she's on her third in 18 months. She couldn't compete with other female artists; she's the first ever to have her first six singles to be #1 hits, in a row. There were some others ... but that's kind of the point. I was honestly wowed by the thing.

I think she's interesting and I haven't seen a performer as eccentric as her in a while (so unlike Beyonce and Timberlake she's interesting in the wtf will she roll out with next variety to me), but I don't really like her music and plus the product placement thing turns me off. I kind of see her as Madonna's second coming and as someone who grew up on Madonna, I'm not terribly impressed. *shrug*

I kind of see her at about the same level of say, Beyonce

Okay that actually really bothers me. Just because Lady Gaga has worked with Beyonce does not put them on the same level. The ONLY thing I have ever liked Beyonce in was 'Telephone'.

And as for 'not getting it', there's kind of.. not anything to get. She's a big production, she's vain and materialistic, but she's also trying to help people. She uses her fame for something better, she's sending messages with her crazy videos, trying to push the limits of what's "socially acceptable". It may not look like it at first glance, but when you look deeper into her music, into her life, you see that she's a GOOD person, deep down, and she's inspiring people to be who they are, not what society is telling them to be. She inspires me like crazy. I wish I'd had her when I was in high school.

Okay, so, I don't know anything about Lady Gaga's personal life, or what she does outside of her videos. This is just my impression of her musical originality. I haven't heard "Telephone" at all. It's not a put down, it's just what I'm saying based ENTIRELY on her music.

What does she do to help people? This is a genuine question, no skepticism is implied. I seriously don't know what you're referring to, and I'm interested. What does she inspire you to do?

Ugh, I feel like I'm coming off as skeptical and cynical, but that is genuinely not what I mean.

..I.. Well, um. I'd suggest actually listening to the music before you put it down, but honestly? Yes. Lady Gaga makes generic pop music. She makes trashy mainstream music, but that's not all she is. I happen to love her music, and I don't really listen to much pop at all. I listen to classic rock and indie music for the most part, but Gaga has something that I just enjoy ( ... )

I'm not putting her down at all. Comparing her to Beyonce was not an insult, although you seemed to be interpreting it as such. idk. I really do think that on a musical level, they are roughly equivalent in talent and ~artistic interestingness~. (Chrome says "interestingness" is a word, ha!) I can see that you disagree, but in my opinion, it's not a bad thing. No need for defensiveness, I'm not attacking her.

I feel like maybe if I knew about her personality, maybe I'd be more into her, but tbh, I can't be bothered. If she inspires you to be a better person, that's awesome, bb!

It's just...okay, how can I say this? I was thinking that maybe I was missing out on something particularly cool about her musically. I'm beginning to think I'm not. It's more about who she is and what she stands for.

I think her music is amazing, I think she's extremely talented though it is just 'pop music', and I love how she brings performance art mainstream. She's also very inspiring, genuine, entertaining, courageous and unafraid. I don't know how to explain my love for her, as it doesn't even entirely make sense to me. I wish I could.

I'd suggest checking out interviews and live performances on youtube? IDK I didn't have much of an opinion until I saw this, and then I downloaded her albums and kept looking into her, and ever since it's been full on lahv lahv lahv.
