Being INTP...

Jun 28, 2007 20:55

I made a discovery not long ago; I did a personality test like so many others before and even if I found it quite relevant, I didn't pay it any more attention.
Below is the result I've got:

Your Score: INTP - the Architect
You scored 9% I to E, 42% N to S, 61% F to T, and 52% J to P!
You are more introverted than extroverted. You are more intuitive than observant, you are more thinking based than feeling based, and you prefer to go with the flow rather than have a routine. The single word to describe your type is the Architect, which belongs to the larger group of rationals. You wish to sculpt the world around you. Others often find you arrogant, yet you have no desire to direct others, only to inform them. You must know the structure of things, and have a voracious appetite for knowledge. You are very rational in everything you do, and probably consider yourself smarter than most.
As a romantic partner, you can be playful with great energy to get things started, but not quite as good on follow through. You may have a tendency to hurt the more emotional types unintentionally by not sharing your own reactions and feelings as you can get swept up in your own ideas and projects. You want to be appreciated for your ability to respond quickly and to fix problems creatively. You need plenty of time to yourself - therefore your partner must respect your need for independence and originality.
Your group summary: Rationals (NT)
Your type summary: INTP

Then a few days ago I talked about it to my brother who talked to his buddy and the two did the tests. Since then it became a sort of obsession and I read a lot about the Myers-Briggs Indicator Type and consequently about Jung's psychological theories. I've never heard about it before but it's really popular and common in the US and not at all in Europe and especially in France.

But in the end I wouldn't have been interested if what I read about INTPs didn't strikingly fit my own personality. It also shed a lot of light on my bro's personality and on our problems in getting along (He is ESTJ, Guardian - Supervisor).
The reading was fascinating, and I recommend it to everybody but it would mostly interest only other NTs :). The most interesting website I found is unfortunately, a French website. But for a general approach you can visit this website, here. Really guys, go and do the test, then read about yourself and why you have the relationships you have with others. It's really enlightening.

But being the NT that I am, I couldn't help going through with the thing to completely uncharted territories... Can you guess?

I did the test for fictional characters :) - ie I did the test pretending I was X from X show.

Here are the results:

There was a problem with Sam. In fact she is the character who present a true dichotomy. There are 2 Sams: the soldier/scientist and the emotional. Most of the time especially lately she is quite genuinely the mastermind but in the past, particularly in emotional situations, her behavior often made her a ESFJ (Guardian - Provider, look here for a profile). A lot of you have said it before, they often played the feminine card with Sam regardless of her character consistency. But I also think it can be interpreted as a real ambivalence in her character.
Otherwise I'm rather proud of myself because I have managed to grasp them accurately :).

Also just to say I am a close INTJ, 52% J to P but I'm still INTP and proud of it :).

So let's take me, I'm INTP:
- I is for Introverted, E for Extroverted (9% I =here==========> E)
- N for iNtuitive, S for Sensing (42% N ====here======> S)
- T for Thinking, F for Feeling (61% F ======here=====> T)
- P for Perception, J for Judgment (52% J =====here=====> P)
My 2 last percentages are rather balanced, which means I'm more balanced as an INTP, I have their qualities but not unhealthily, I have their weakness but not systematically.

Now introducing another jargon:
The type labels have another role, it is to define a hierarchy in your way of thinking based on Jung's theories.
I'm INTP which means that my dominant is Ti, my auxiliary is Ne, my tertiary is Si and my inferior is Fe. Ti (introverted thinking) is my dominant function, it means I am mainly an introverted thinker, it's my main activity, thinking in my head heedless to the outside world. This thinking is supported by my Ne (extroverted iNtuition) - the intuitions that I have about the outer world. The two combined mean that I always look for structure and logic in the outer world but I spend my time in my inner world thinking about the outer world. Si (my introverted sensation) accompanies my intuition, here introverted means that I'm not interested in the real objects of the outer world but only on what ideas, impressions, effects they have inside of me. Finally my inferior is Fe (my extroverted feeling), it is the less developed function. It means that I have problems expressing my feelings even to myself, I tend to ignore any emotional things and to rationalize everything. But it doesn't mean I don't have feelings and at some time, they just burst uncontrollably raw and burning.

If there are NTs among you, I told you it was rather fascinating :).

Of course, they are only types and no type can ever define exactly who you are. But still it can describe how you are the more likely to behave in your every day life. But mainly, it makes you realize how you think differently from the others types. Because also know that for instance NTs (Rationals - mostly scientists) and NFs (Idealists - mostly artists) represent both like 10-15% of the population. 45% are SJs (Guardians) and 25% are SPs (Artisans). The distribution is also different depending on your gender. Female NTs are for instance even rarer, particularly female INTPs and INTJs (1/50). If you are like me, be prepared to never meet a female kindred spirit LOL.
