You Can't Do That On Television
And I was reading a fic in SG-1 Fandom and S/J pairing and for the umpteenth time I thought about how I didn't see the things in the same light than the author which leads me now to this S/J musing I am doing now.
~ What annoys me to no end: Fics where there are madly in love and are so angsty about those pesky regulations because they can't act on their feelings. They are quite abundant around, it's damned annoying.
-> You are all wrong guys, if they were already in love with others (on one side, the other or both), regulations would demand of Jack (CO) to move Sam (2IC) in another team. Regulations are there to prevent those type of mushy situations so please stop with this cheesy sappiness of yours and get real.
=> The situation is that yes they care about each other and yes they are beyond the term of friends... because they are teammates, nakama, brother in arms, family... etc I'm not saying there is no potential between the two but remind yourself that none of them even begun to wonder anything. And the real angst in their non-existent romantic relationship is not about not acting on their desire but really about not even be in the situation of evaluating or reevaluting their actual relationship. Their story is a series of unsaid and implied things.
~ What annoys me to no end (bis): Fics where Jack pretexts that now that there is no regs anymore (after reassignment, retiring), he can't be with Sam because there will be rumors about her having slept (implied with him in the past) her way up the career ladder.
-> It's so ridiculous. And when it's coupled with a "I'm too old for you, I can't offer you a family even if you dumped your last boyfriend and you're turning forty"... seriously my eyes are rolling till it hurts.
=> What is realistic instead if you don't want them to get together:
- him not being able to get it up and her having to dump him for sexual frustration
- Sam can't get over the CO/2IC dynamic and it is just hero-worship/crush only at distance
- Jack not making any move, Sam not making any move = by habit, fear... etc
- Sam dying during when of her mission
- Jack dying in an accident or of a heart attack
=> What is realistic instead if you want them to have sex but don't want them to stay together:
- Sam being a bad lover/Jack being a bad lover or both
- It was just an itch
- They realized they are only friends
Unfortunately, nobody writes those stories, why? Because people are cheap and authors cheaper. If it turns bad, better it be totally unbelievable and mushy and cheesy and sappy.
~ What annoys me to no end (ter): Fics where Jack reproaches Sam with moving on or Sam reproaches him with not talking to her/pushing her away. All in all, when one put the blame on the other for the problem in their potential romantic relationship.
-> I'm rolling my eyes. Get real! You're overanalyzing every single words they have said and twist them so it fits your own deluded universe. But truth is each time it was always a one-sided conversation and they never said anything relevant or clear. Plus they are not lovers and barely typical friends than these sort of pesky argument are just improbable. It's one of Jack/ Daniel banter (you did, i didn't, you did too... etc)
=> While there might be hesitations from both side, none of them will breeche the line before actually at least talking honestly of their relationship once, many times. There is no hard feelings from both of them one way or another and if a negative sentiment had to appear, it would be bittersweetness and regret.
To conclude, I will say that S/J is a pairing all in subtlety, restraint, control with a lot of unsaid and implied.
