The mendelssohn quartet isn't all that great. Granted, it's very nice, but it's certainly not the best thing he ever wrote. I like the mendelssohn overture that we're playing in westchester strings better (and the violin concerto)
No, I am not saying the octet is bad. It is very nice and I like it very much. Just if you want to play something with 8 parts, play 'Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis' by Ralph Vaughn Williams, because it is indeed the best thing Vaughn Williams ever wrote and is quite amazing at that.
True, the octet's not the best thing Mendelssohn wrote overall, but you have to admit that it's pretty damn good for it to be written by a 16 year old. His violin concerto...eh. I find it hard to understand why so many people gush about it. Sure, it's pretty, but...I dunno. Tchaik>Mendelssohn.
Don't mention YSO. I can't stand half the stuff we're playing this year.
I think I've heard of someone telling about that piece; I need to find a recording of that soon.
Hey I like the stuff we're playign at YSO this semester. Much better than last semester, at least. And by like I mean that I like the Mendelssohn and Saint-Saens and the rest of it is just silly filler like stuff. The Borodin that they cut was really cool, and I'm angry they cut it.
And jeez, he was 16 when he wrote that? Either Mendelssohn was a genius, or there's a whooole big difference in the amount of intelligence that society is producing today than when Mendelssohn was around. I'm shooting for the latter, but I'm not ruling out that Mendelssohn was a genius.
I agree that it's better than last semester, but I think it's still shitty. I heart the SaintSaens, don't get me wrong on that. WHEN HE CUT THE DANCES AND REPLACED IT WITH THE WALTZ, I WAS FLIPPING OUT. UGH I was so mad. But yes, I was angry too.

I agree; it seems that way these days. Except then there're those crazy people who are crazy talented and I feel intimidated when I stand next to them. And people who get into Ivies (Ivys?). And intelligent people in general. I think I'm going to stop rambling because I'm depressing myself right now.
