on maids

Actually, given a choice, I would rather not have any maid. Housework is manageable to me. The only thing is that we need someone to watch over my father when I go to work; my father is not very well.

The problem with having a maid, even if she is doing the housework well, is that we have another independent mind to contend with in the household. A clever maid is a double-edged sword: she can be a great help when you need her; but she can also have her own ideas and play games with you in order to tactfully contradict your clear directions. Managing a maid is not as easy as it sounds, like just being the boss...

Already, at work, I have to contend with office work relations. Now at home, I may be starting to take care of how to handle the maid. I feel that I have lost part of my freedom: the freedom from thinking before I act.

Now it is still early to tell which my clever maid will eventually lean towards. Would she understand and respect her own role? Only time will tell. I do fear that she might be too stubborn in her ways to adapt to our ways. These first two weeks will be a crucial period. No more holidays for me.
