so i've been thinking a lot about writing lately. (i know it's kind of a ludicris idea right now, as i average about three hours of sleep a day, after school and work. but i still think about it.) specifically, i've been thinking about original writing, so i guess i'm directing this post to those of you who've done original work ( Read more... )

I'm going to share with you something I've learned in my years as a writer: There is nothing original. Don't be afraid that you're copying something else, or else you won't write anything.

There are no original characters, every character is based on someone you've met or seen, even if you don't realize it. It's amazing the way things seep into our subconscious minds. Really, every character we write is a combination of a million people we've met, even if it's just in passing.

Also, you write fan fiction. You're an awesome writer, but even those characters you write, even though they're real people, you don't know them. Those characters you write are original in your own way. They're simply what you perceive them to be. Sure, parts of those characters might be true to life, but most of what is written isn't true; it's original fiction.

Original stories really aren't hard, you just have to let yourself go. Don't be afraid to write what you want. When I write (and some of my favorite works have come about this way, actually) I like to start with one line. I'm a big fan of a very strong, unexpected opening line. That's usually what I'll think of first, and if a story follow, a story follows. If I don't get anything from that line, I get it go or work on it later.

The important thing is to not force yourself. If you're not feeling a story, chances are the reader won't be either. It has to work for you, if it doesn't just move on. A story has to feel natural for it to work well. You really don't have a problem with that, though. Hell, you make me believe in twins fucking.

But really, if you have an idea, just start writing it. It'll all just flow.

And wow, hi, longest comment. Can you tell how I feel about writing?
