Ever see that humor file about how to bathe a cat? Here's how to make chocolate cake.
1-1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1-1/2 tsp. baking soda
1-1/2 cups hot water
1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1-1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1. Preheat oven to 350F. Butter and flour 13x9x2" metal baking pan. Get the kitten off the counter.
2. Put sugar, cocoa, and salt in large bowl. Pour in oil (do not mix). Get the kitten off the counter.
3. Put baking soda in medium bowl. Stir in 1-1/2 cups hot water (mixture will bubble up). Add baking soda mixture to coca mixture. Using electric mixer, beat until cool, about 1 minute. Beat in flour, then eggs and vanilla. Transfer mixture to prepared pan. Remove kitten from stovetop.
4. Bake cake until tester comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Cool cake completely in pan on rack. Cut cake into squares and serve. Use the sink hose to spritz water at the kitten when she tries to "help" wash the dishes.
The batter comes out rather thin and it will look alarming, but it will bake up perfectly. This is a bake-sale cake in consistency and crumb -- sturdy enough to stand up to a nice thick frosting but light enough to eat a lot of it with milk and ice cream.
