My review of Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

Nov 15, 2009 20:25

This weekend I caught up with a few friends and got the opportunity to catch the movie Precious and I’m so happy I did. Currently the movie is only showing in two theaters in my area. (talk about limited run, and what a shame) Hopefully, it will open nationwide and soon. If you have an opportunity to catch this movie, please go, you won’t be disappointed.

Everyone in the movie was absolutely terrific. Mo’Nique was excellent as the dysfunctional mother to Precious. New founded love for Paula Patton, she really, really, really did an excellent job. You could tell by her performance how important her portrayal of the teacher Ms. Rain was to her. She wanted to get it right, and she did. She nailed it. This was a different look for Mariah Carey as well. She seem to strike the right balance as the social worker and I think the way she underplayed it help to support her role as the clam, in control social worker in the group dynamics. Lenny Kravitz did a great job as the Nurse John. Loved him. And Finally, Gabourey Sidibe was excellent as Precious.

I didn’t find anything predictable about the movie and like someone stated: "Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire" is not a film wallowing in the stillness of depression; instead, it vibrates with the kind of energy derived only from anger and hope. The entire casts are amazing; they carry out a firestorm of raw emotion.

If you haven’t seen one of the many trailers for this movie, check it out.
