My good friend David is partially responsible for my - admittedly pretty late - awakening to the full disastrous dimension of the global problem that is plastic. Especially, and more than anything, DISPOSABLE plastic items, which are intended to be used ONCE, and then left to rot never ever go away.
My struggle to avoid plastic packaging has only just begun, and already one of the bigger problems is evident: Most organic produce is - for whatever totally stupid and fucked up reason - wrapped in plastic, portioned in plastic bags, plastic nets, or at the very least labelled with plastic stickers.
This is not only wasteful but actually completely absurd and cynical on top of it. So that means, if I decide to buy organic groceries at the grocery store closest to me, I am forced to buy plastic. Or, if I decide to avoid plastic, I am forced to buy non-organic produce.
Insane.
I am not on a crusade against plastic in general, even though I do believe plastic production with the use of petroleum should be banned rather sooner than later, but I am not going to throw out my vacuum or my computer or my fridge any time soon, just to get rid of plastic.
What is far bigger a problem than those items though, is the ever-present packaging. I have developed a deep hatred for unnecessary packaging, as it is good for absolutely nothing but selling a product that nobody would buy otherwise, because it is overpriced DUE TO the packaging and advertising costs it causes. Huh?!
I swear, sometimes I think there is absolutely no way around eventually moving into some sort of eco hippie commune. Because our wonderful modern society is a lie. And a joke. Albeit a rather sad one. It obviously does not function properly, and it is gnawing on itself, blind and intoxicated by the mountains of useless trash that will eventually suffocate it.
