I Saw Three Ships

I wrote two stories for I Saw Three Ships this year.

A Pon Farr Tale for Settiai. Shockingly (*gasp*) this is ST:AOS, Gaila/Spock/Uhura.
Summary: He's looked puzzled by Gaila since she stepped off the shuttle.

This was the third story I started for 3 Ships this year, and while this story is a good one, I think I'm going to try to go back and actually write the other two ideas, or at least parts of them, because they are very cool ideas and very long ones, too. I want to be able to write long stories.

It's a Thing for Vera. Leverage, Alec/Eliot/Parker
Summary: Alec wasn't good with talking about his feelings, and he wasn't sure Parker even knows she has them, but he also didn't see how they can work this shit out without talking about it.

This was a pinch hit, which you can tell because the person who wrote me a story was Vera, and I try to avoid circle jerks like that, especially with our larger fandoms.

Vera wrote me the lovely The Timely Job, which is also AEP, and features a very take charge Parker, which is a characterization I really like.

So, every year, I put my finger on the assignments and when matching equally large fandoms up, I match the ones I like first. Usually this results in there being three Grey's Anatomy stories instead of two, nothing particularly noticeable. This year, I over did the weighting for Leverage like whoah, and there were seven Leverage stories. (Although that was not entirely my fault. In some cases, writers were matched on a different fandom but responded to a Leverage request.)

In other mod screwups, I did not send out the check in e-mail, I just did the check in poll, and I think that had a big impact on the number of dropouts (ten, man. TEN!) Next year, I have to do the e-mail, so I do not wind up in the megascramble that I did wind up in.

Also, I want to re-do the sign up form so that people know that they should sign up with the name they want their recipient to put on their story, and the name they want the story they write to becoming from. Why people put their legal names in sign up forms for fandom, I don't know, but it keeps happening. And then they respond to a poll or e-mail you something and I'm thinking, "Who the heck are you, you're not in the master spreadsheet."

Also, also, the pinchhitters totally saved my butt. I had an early drop out, and arranged a pinch hit, and then, because of my spreadsheet highlighting, I failed to note that the pinch hit story did not come in until the fourth. I'm just glad my pinch hitters responded to my frantic plea, because it was a person who made requests in four fandoms I'm not that comfortable in.

I got some better tools for working with the challenge this year: Kompozer lets me c/p RTF files and HTML e-mail and turn it into passable HTML, and Filezilla is just a sexy, sexy FTP program. But I still hate doing this by hand. I want to do a local otw-archive install, but they probably won't have it ready for non-programmers to install by October, and I don't know any ruby or rails, and I'm not that interested in learning. If I do any more dev stuff, I will probably work on some more Dreamwidth site schemes.

So, I'm considering just putting 2010 on the AO3. I don't want to, I like having stuff on my very own website. But the doing the theme, and making the template, and cutting and pasting everything so there are real paragraphs, and hating people because it's 2010 and they don't know how to use a goddamn horizontal rule: it makes the whole thing not as much fun as it ought to be.

I'm also reconsidering whether or not I want to assign myself a story. The thing is, I love getting a story a whole bunch. But writing a story means that, if I don't get it done early, then I'm distracted by my own story at the time stories are due and I most need to be on my A game for the challenge. Maybe just giving myself an early deadline, so I have to either finish it by Yuletide or hand it off to a pinch hitter? I don't know, I'll have to think on this some more.
