Not yet time for an epicaricacy egg cream

As you may have heard elsewhere, LJ today laid off a large portion of its staff. Alarmingly, they did so without providing a severance package (or more than a week's notice), which speaks to fairly dire financial straits. (The Valleywag report that it was more than half the staff is wrong, but it was also far above the near customary Silicon Valley ( Read more... )

Another person on my f-list also mentioned the need to back up contacts. I don't know about you, but I have a lot of fen contacts that if LJ went away, I don't think I have a good email address for. I am toying with posting an entry with screened comments to collect email/website contact info.

I don't think LJ will die in a big kaboom, but through slow attrition, but either way, I don't want to lose all the odd corners of fandom I have found here.

I cannot recommend enough getting an LJ-framework client for any LJ Windows users who might need to migrate. I use Semagic to cross-post every entry I make already, so in the event of an LJ kaboom, I'm already set on four other servers. (GreatestJournal, InsaneJournal, JournalFen and Inksome, respectively--Inksome is invite-only, but there's no limit to how many invitations an existing member can send, and I'm willing to extend an invite to anybody who needs one.

A tutorial on how to configure your Semagic to cross-post is available here: http://snapetoy.greatestjournal.com/16797.html )

ETA: Oh, yeah, and here is brown_betty's fantastic tutorial on re-uploading your LJ to another server, so that everything you've already posted will be safe and waiting for you: http://brown-betty.livejournal.com/284083.html

When you say you've heard that LJArchive is being bounced, what do you mean? It's what I use for all of my various journals. :(

Also, interesting note about edited comments. I'll have to check that when I back up tonight.

I don't know exactly. It's a windows tool, and I'm on Linux. I've just seen people saying they could not connect to the server with it.

It worked fine for me just now; I don't know what's up.

(also posting this at the nmg post)

another option for mac users who, like me, are fairly incompetent with python is xjournal

it's an lj client that will also archive all your entries (but no comments) for you. go to window -> history and you can dl your entire journal.

Thanks for the comprehensive list. I try to always double post to LJ and IJ, so I'm all good. Unless something better to suit our needs comes along, there will always be a Danga-based platform site somewhere for us to clone ourselves to, whether LJ ever blinks out of existence or not.
