According to the
San Francisco Examiner various official parties are contemplating charges on the city core of San Francisco. They mention the
congestion charge that started in 2003 in London as an example of what they'd like to achieve. I know from discussions I've seen on bicycle newsgroups and general news I've followed that the congestion charge seems to have worked really well for London. Additionally the BBC has a page talking about case studies of similar systems in
other parts of the world. I'd like to see more municipalities in the US consider these sort of measures.
It wouldn't make much sense for some place like Los Angeles which is totally spread out and has no heart. But for urban areas with well defined central cores such as Manhattan, Boston and other places it could be very effective. Of course, in the US nothing is more important than our cars and our inalienable right to drive them regardless of the damage
they do to us,
and to others.
