White Trash Tuesday- Chapter Eighty-Six

Nov 29, 2004 23:42

It was a baffling and busy time. Essays, all nighters,
studying, cramming, reading things over that had been
forgotten, memorization, waking up early to go to exams, and
very little sleep.

Friends met briefly as they walked by each other and
only had time to say “hello”. Everyone wanted to drop
everything and just go out for some beers. Some people gave
in to the temptation and others resisted it and stayed in
their quiet areas with their quiet books.

June’s last exam was for the class that she shared with
Max. It was his last exam, too. He finished before her and
she found him waiting outside of the room for her when she
was done.

“I feel like a huge weight has physically been lifted
off my back,” she told him. “It felt like I was lugging a
pile of bricks around and now it’s just gone.”

“I’m so glad it’s all over with,” Max said.

“Do you wanna come out with me and Carrie tonight?”

“She’s done too?”

“She was done two days ago. It’s her last night here
before she goes home for the holidays.”

“Yeah, okay, I’ll come,” Max said. “Where are we
going?”

“The Loop,” June said.

June had never thought of Max as someone who would
dance in a bar. Yet when she and Carrie got up to dance, he
got up to dance with them. They started making up goofy
dance moves for the purpose of looking ridiculous. They
were drunk and loud and having fun in their favourite bar.
June had not felt this content in a long time.

They danced until they were exhausted and then sat
down. When a good song came on they got up again. They
danced and sang along loudly to the last song. When it was
over, the lights came on, and people blinked at each other
in surprise, even though they knew that it was going to
happen eventually any way.

“What now?” Max said as the three of them stood there
while other people were shuffling out and squinting.
“Should we just go home?”

“Let’s go to Slices,” June said.

“Yeah, let’s,” Carrie said.

The line up as Slices was a long one, but Carrie, June
and Max waited patiently. When they finally had their
pizza, they stood outside while they ate it.

“This is so good,” June said. “Mmmm. I love zucchini
on pizza.”

“I love tomatoes on pizza,” Carrie said. “What did you
get Max?”

“Just pepperoni,” Max said.

“Just pepperoni?” June said. “I didn’t know that they
even made just pepperoni.”

“Of course they make just pepperoni, June,” Max said.
“They’re a pizza place.”

“I know,” June said. “But if I want just pepperoni,
I’ll go somewhere that’s not as good.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” Max said.

“Whatever,” June said.

The three of them parted ways in front of Carrie and
June’s appartment since it was on the way to Max’s place.

“Have a good x-mas,” June said, giving Max a hug.

“I will,” he said. “I’m taking Jones home to meet my
folks.” Carrie laughed and gave him a hug.

“See you in a few weeks,” she said.
